About Us

Dr. Chatman has been practicing medicine in southeast, Michigan for more than 20 years. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University and specialized in Family Medicine. In 1995 she was the first African-American female to join the medical staff at St. John Hospital and Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine. She developed and implemented their first School Based health Center Program which opened in September of 1995. The school based programs were ground breaking and among the first in the city to place doctors inside elementary, middle and high schools. Her primary focus was preventative medicine and health education, with an emphasis on childhood asthma and pregnancy prevention. Using a combination of interactive group sessions with hands-on teaching programs and comprehensive medical care, Dr Chatman and her staff touched the lives of over 10,000 students, reduced absenteeism and emergency room visits and enhanced the overall wellness of the students that participated in their programs. Her school based health centers were so successful, within ten years she and her staff were invited into 12 additional public schools including the Cornerstone Schools. Dr. Chatman’s work on the treatment of childhood asthma, in the school based health center setting can be read in the Journal of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology, (2003 and 2004). She wrote the “Ask The Doctor Column” for the Michigan Chronicle Newspaper for over nine years. She was given the National Congressional Leadership Award in Washington DC in 2003, Detroit Urban League Community Service Award in 1998, The Michigan State Senate Physician of the Year Award in 1997 and is listed in the Library of Congress. Dr Chatman was also inducted into “The Leading Physicians of the World”, in 2018, Trademark Woman of Distinction, Honors Edition 2018 and Healthcare Innovations Award at the Harvard Club of Business in 2018. She also made numerous television appearances as a medical expert for Channels 2 and 4, in which she discussed current health topics and relevant preventative health and wellness recommendations.

Dr. Chatman has been managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sexual dysfunction, obesity, thyroid disease, arthritis and many other conditions for over 20 years. Recently, she opened The Center for Functional Health and Wellness and launched the “Body and Wellness Program.” Her desire to include this program was due to the increasing number of prescription medicines taken by her patients, concern for side effects and a need for disease prevention and health education. She also recognized many of her patients could be better helped if they were given the tools to implement affective lifestyle change into their lives. The Center for Functional Health and Wellness provides mentoring services to teach the patients how to implement a lasting lifestyle change based upon their unique medical conditions and diagnostic test results.

Functional medicine is a method of practice that identifies the underlying cause of the medical problem. This allows for the treatment of the underlying cause condition and not just the symptom. Using a comprehensive and refreshing approach to body transformation, Dr. Chatman addresses the five pillars of health which include mind-set, Nutrition, fitness and hormone balance. She incorporates traditional medicine, education, mentoring and permanent weight control to customize a lifestyle program uniquely for her patients. Her success is phenomenal! A majority of her patients report a minimal 10 lbs. or more of weight loss, in less than three months, improved sleep, improved blood sugars, reduction in prescription medication and an overall improved sense of well-being. Dr. Chatman is one of the first physicians in the country to offer this proven program of success and is answering the demand for better healthcare by reducing prescription medication through education, awareness and lifestyle change.
