Have you ever experienced an apology that really didn't feel like one? It feels more like, "sorry I got caught" or "you took it wrong" Here is the 5 parts of a good apology.

1 Own It! This is what I did wrong.

2 Empathy. How would this feel if it were to happen to me.

3 Post-Mortem. This is what I am going to do to make sure this doesn't happen in the future.

4 Forgiveness. Ask the person to forgive. They are not obligated to forgive!

5 Amends. What can I do right now to help ease the pain? If they tell you how you can help, DO IT

Here is an example:
I stayed out too late with my friends last night.
I would feel disrespected if you were to do this.
I will set a timer on my phone 30 minutes before I am to leave and I will call you that I am on my way.
Will you forgive me?
What can I do right now to help ease your pain?

What is a Fair Fighting Contract?

This is a contract between two parties that both agree to use when there is a conflict. The rules help to keep you focused on the task at hand and not be pulled into something neither of you can finish. Each item on the fair fighting contract should be negotiated and signed before attempting. A fair fighting contract could look something like this:

1. No fighting before a cup of coffee or after 9:00pm.

2. No yelling, if unable to remain calm, request a time out.

3. No threatening each other with divorce.

4. No name calling or character assassination.

5. No gaslighting or lying.

6. No telling the other how to think or feel.

7. No comparing to other people.

8. No interrupting the other while speaking.

9. Only 1 topic at a time.

10. Remember the other person is a child of God.
