Do you wake up 4-5 hours after you fall asleep, only to sit in bed trying to get back to sleep?

I do, and it is so frustrating!

I will awaken, looking at the time, amazed that I am awake. Then my frustration will build and the possibility of falling asleep will vanish. All of my focus will be on the fact that I am not asleep but should be.

Here are a couple of things that might help...

Go to bed at the same time each day. When I say that, I mean NO playing games or surfing the internet. Let your body get used to relaxing and falling asleep at a regular time.

Also, perform the same actions before you go to sleep. For me, it is to recall the good things that happened during the day, and the good things that will happen tomorrow (and the next month and year!) Remember the good that happened, not the bad.

How will this help you not wake up later? It will put your mind in a good place for sleep. It will better allow you to relax for a good 8 hours of rest.

Sleep well!

Bring a friend in stressful situations!

My daughter has anxiety issues. It stresses her, I'm sure like many of you, to be in situations that she is unfamiliar with.

Being around people that she does not know makes her VERY uneasy. She will shut down and not be able to think properly. Her mind will race with potential things that MIGHT happen. Her heart will beat faster and she will begin to have many anxiety displays.

To counter these feelings, she will invite a friend to go with her!

Recently, she was invited to a wedding where she knew very few people. She knew that she could not be in that type of unfamiliar situation, but she wanted to see her friend get married. She was, potentially, in a difficult situation.

She called her friend and asked her friend if she would join her. They went, and the wedding was a success and a panic attack was avoided!

If you know that you are going to be in an uncomfortable situation, bringing along a good friend can make the uncomfortable situation seem much more bearable. Familiarity can counter unfamiliarity.

Reorganizing takes your mind off of depression!

Are you tired of staring at the ceiling and need to get out of bed but don't know what to do?

One productive option is to reorganize...your clothes, your bookshelves, your kitchen, your furniture, your whole house!

The value of reorganization is that your mind will be occupied with the task at hand and you will not be able to dwell on your depressive thoughts. Once you put this thing here, what will you put in its place? That thing!

Thoughts will be geared toward a specific task rather than floating toward your depression.

Your house could use a makeover anyway, right?

Keep a depression journal!

One of the best ways to get feelings off of your chest is to share them! Most often, though, people don't wish to share their feelings when they are depressed. But you can get the same relief when you write down your thoughts.

Whether you accomplish this with a paper journal or a computer, writing down your thoughts, no matter how outlandish, can be wonderful therapy.

Another benefit is that you can review past entries. Looking at what you have written a while ago can show you how far you have come in your depression...whether in a good direction or not so good. It will help you to assess your next moves.

If you decide the therapy is necessary, the journal could also be beneficial to allow your therapist an insight into your mind. It will give a history of your thoughts, providing a tremendous help to the therapist in unpacking your perspective.

Yet, most of all, journaling is an easy means to share your desires and frustrations with someone who will listen without judgement.

Give journaling a try, you might like it.

Medicine is NOT the be-all end-all!

It took me a while to learn that medication, by itself, is not always the answer. Shoot, my family is full of doctors and nurses!

Don't get me wrong, medication is a definite necessity! But it will not completely heal your whole body. This is especially true when dealing with the mind.

I have been on medication for years. However, only through changing my ACTIONS and THOUGHTS have I made the most significant leaps forward in my mental health.

Medications have their place, but the biggest strides forward still need to be made from the inside!

Getting just the right amount of sleep is important when you are depressed!

When depression hits, you want to stay in bed all of the time. When it is really bad, you don't want to move!

Actually, for some people, it is very difficult to get to sleep...I have NEVER experienced that though!

Nevertheless, it is very important to try VERY hard to stay around 8 hours of sleep per day. That seems to be the magic number.

Any number below or above can actually make depression even worse!

So when depression is bad, work hard to get out of bed and go to a chair in your living room and maybe read a book. Find some activity that suits you, just don't sleep your day away!
