Burnout experienced by adults living with Pathological Demand Avoidance is distinctly different from Autistic burnout.

PDA Burnout in Adults needs to be more widely understood and recognized so Adult PDAers can have the knowledge and support needed to better recognize the root of the burnout experienced in order to better support through PDA burnout as well as to best prevent future burnout.

Here is a blog post created based on my personal lived experience, professional experience and understanding plus the input of 12 other adult PDAers who consented to their experiences being shared as a part of this educational project (in the form of a blog post).

Fun story: I went to backspace on a single word as I was about to publish the blog to my site earlier when I accidentally tapped the power button (which just to happens to be located directly behind the backspace button on my work laptop). Womp womp. Lost about 20 minutes of typing work after working on this post for roughly 4 hours, collectively. What a time…

For Neurodivergent people seeking a therapist who has knowledge and understanding of Neurodiversity including in-depth knowledge and understanding of different neurotypes, while also practicing from an affirming lens can prove to be incredibly challenging.
So many Neurodivergent adults have tried multiple therapists over the span of many years coming away with more questions than answers:

Whats wrong with me?

Why doesn’t therapy seem to work for me?

For those of us lucky enough to learn there is a difference in the way therapy needs to be modified and applied based on our neurotypes and indivisuals needs - we then have the daunting task of finding a therapist who can support us in the ways our unique selves need.

There are directories I recommend:
- Inclusive Therapists
- NDTherapists
- Therapy Den
- Open Path Collective
- Good Therapy

New on the blog: Mindfulness - Trauma-Sensitive Practices

As someone who has been encouraged to use mindfulness practices and who has been educated and trained in how to counsel clients to do the same - much of the trauma-sensitive aspect is either left out entirely or is sped through far too quickly (even in 40 hour long trauma trainings like EMDR basic training which does go into certain mindfulness techniques to use with clients).

This blog post serves as a primer for understanding how mindfulness practices have been taken from its creators and modified in ways that are not trauma-sensitive and how we must learn more about ways to adapt and modify mindfulness practices to be trauma-sensitive for everyone who may use them.

Neurodiverse relationships (meaning more than one person with different Neurotypes like an Autistic ADHDer living with OCD and an Autistic PDAer living with Bipolar) can be complicated in ways Neuronormative understanding of relationships do not explain.

We often (unintentionally) bring Neuronormative expectations into Neurodiverse relationships adding to the frustration we experience in communication.

Even when we’re affirming and inclusive of different ways of functioning in our relationship, differences like spiky profiles can cause extra challenges within communication.

Understanding how someone else’s brain works, how they take in information, process it and express it can go a long way in better understanding each other (which is usually the point of communication, right…).

I am often asked how folks can find a good trauma-informed therapist to work on complex trauma as a Neurodivergent adult.

I’ve given the topic of finding the best fit for trauma therapy as a Neurodivergent adult a lot of thought over the years based on my lived experience as a multiply Neurodivergenr adult working through complex trauma as well as professional who works in this area.

While the experience of seeking a trauma-informed therapist is certainly an individual one as we are all needing different things from a therapist - there are some foundational questions we can use to get a good sense of how the therapist we are interested in working with understands trauma and supports clients working through it.

I hope this blog post which is accessible on the Neuro Clarity Counseling, LLC website under “Blog”.

New: on the blog - a post about Neurodivergent intergenerational trauma!

Here is an excerpt:

“For those familiar with intergenerational trauma, it is widely known to be the trauma that is passed down through the generations (i.e. the impact of grandparents living through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression passed down via genetics) as well as the toxic and abusive patterns of behavior we experience from our family members based on our unique family culture.

Neurodivergent intergenerational trauma is all of this plus the trauma we inherit and experience due to the impact of multiple generations of family members with unrecognized and unsupported Neurodivergent needs. “ - Cherish Graff, LPC - Neuro Clarity Counseling, LLC

I’ve been planning this post for a month.
Then it became a demand.
Impulsively infodumped into Canva and am just going to post even though it’s not perfect.

Living with a PDA nervous system is hard any day.
It’s especially hard for a lot of us around the winter holidays.
Here are some aspects of the Pathological Demand Avoidance related experiences around the winter holidays.

A lot of it has to do with traditional expectations put upon us, no matter how much we may genuinely enjoy the activities or reconnecting with people we care about - it can still be too much.

Disclaimer: every PDAer is a unique individual and this is a general overview and cannot possibly fully represent the PDA experience. This is not diagnostic, advice nor therapy.
