SURGICAL SITE INFECTIONS (SSI) & PREVENTION:
(You'll want to read it all!)

****What are surgical site infections (SSIs)?****
-SSIs occur after surgery in the part of the body where surgery took place. MOST patients who have surgery do not develop a surgical site infection.

****What are the symptoms of SSIs?****
-Common symptoms include redness and/or pain around the incision/injection site, drainage of a cloudy fluid from the surgical wound, and fever.

****Are SSIs treatable?****
-Yes, most SSIs are treatable with antibiotics; the antibiotic used depends on the bacteria causing the infection. Your physician will likely request wound cultures to verify which bacteria they need to treat.

****What can YOU do BEFORE surgery to help prevent SSIs?****
-Tell your physician about other medical problems, and if you've had a surgical site infection after a previous surgery.
-Notify your doctor's office if you have a skin infection, rash, or sores prior to surgery.
-If you have diabetes, MONITOR and CONTROL your blood sugar.
-Shower and wash your hair the morning of your procedure; put on clean clothes after showering. Do not apply lotions, hair spray, or makeup after showering.

****What can YOU do AFTER surgery to help prevent SSIs?****
-Keep your dressing clean, dry, and intact. Do NOT remove dressing to show others your wound, and do not let friends/family touch your surgical wound and/or dressings.
-Make sure your doctor or nurse has educated you on how to care for your wound BEFORE you leave.
-ALWAYS clean your hands before caring for your wound.
-Ensure your bed linens and clothes are clean; do NOT allow your pets into your bed after your surgery.
-Notify your doctor IMMEDIATELY if any SSI symptoms arise.

THIS WEEK’S MONDAY SPOTLIGHT:
Dr. A. A. Hayee

Dr. Hayee received his undergraduate degree in Biology from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Following this, he attended medical school at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, where he completed research in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease and handheld biodetectors.

It was during his anesthesia residency when Dr. Hayee became drawn to pain management. He enjoyed both the challenges presented in managing patients’ post-surgery pain, as well as the satisfaction he felt after successfully finding relief for their pain. During his residency, he concentrated his research on the genetic basis of pain and the use of gene therapy to treat pain conditions. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Hayee was awarded the Most Outstanding Anesthesia Resident Award!

Dr. Hayee then completed his fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he received training in acute and chronic pain management in all parts of the body.

Dr. Hayee co-founded Flower Mound Interventional Pain Physicians in 2010 with Dr. Vu.
