So, last weekend I started a home-brew adventure RPG with my kids. No hit points or leveling, just basic skills, spells, and actions. It’s really just an interactive story with die rolls. I make up the story as they progress, the kids can’t tell the difference and they absolutely LOVE it.
They call it “The Story” and want to do it every night but we’re usually unable because of tutoring, sports, and other commitments throughout the week. It’s reminded me of the tropes I’ve heard other gamers use for RPGs and i thought it’d be funny to share.
1. Murder Hobos- my 9 y/o wants to kill any NPC that inconveniences him. Sometimes his sisters agree. It’s made me be creative when creating NPCs on the fly.
2. They insist on me using their character names constantly.
3. They each embody the persona of their characters well in elementary ways. My middle daughter chose to be a rogue thief and assassin. She frequently interjects with “and I sneak up on them” but I think that’s just so she gets a chance to roll a die.
I never gamed before, so I just use a digital dice tool online. I found one that makes dice rattling noises. Does anyone have advice on preferred places to shop? I want to expand what we have but on a budget .
