As we gear up for back-to-school season, it's normal for kids to feel anxious about changes, so talk with them about their feelings and set routines to help with the transition. Remember, one in five children face mental, emotional, or behavioral challenges - help is available if you need it! 💚📚

We’re taught to stay quiet. To smile through it. To apologize for the things we can’t control. But here’s the truth: You’re not alone in this. Your feelings are real. And there’s strength in speaking up. Because healing doesn’t happen in silence. It happens together.

We protect ourselves by going quiet. But over time, the things we don’t say get heavier. You don’t have to share everything. But you deserve to share something. Start where you are. Feel what’s real. Say it when you’re ready.

Utah recorded the deadliest year for motorcycle fatalities last year with 53 deaths and 346 serious motorcycle related injuries, since the Utah Department of Public Safety has been keeping track.

With summer heating up, Intermountain Health trauma experts are reminding Utahns about the importance of staying safe when hitting Utah’s roads – whether it be riding on the highway – or driving up the street to the next adventure in the great outdoors.

“Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere, and any place,” said Anthony Bacon, MD, general surgeon at Intermountain Medical Center. “However, there are things we can all do to prevent life-threatening injuries and keep you from becoming a statistic.”

1. Wear a Helmet
“People involved in accidents wearing helmets are far more likely to survive and get back on that motorcycle, bike, scooter, or ATV. Those who don’t wear a helmet end up with a longer recovery time or don’t recover at all,” said Dr. Bacon.

Motorcycle helmets are also estimated to be 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcycle drivers and 41% effective for motorcycle passengers.

2. Wear Other Safety Gear
“Don’t forget there is more to protective gear than just a helmet,” said Dr. Bacon “Goggles, over-the-ankle boots, gloves, sturdy full-length pants, a long-sleeved shirt and the right footwear are great at taking a little punishment if you take a crash.”

3. Slow Down – Ride Distraction Free
Nearly half of all fatal crashes occur in crashes over 50 mph. Even when there are no cars around, it’s vital to ride safe, especially since over 40% of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve no other motor vehicles.

4. When Driving - Look for Motorcycles
Fatal car and motorcycle crashes typically nearly double during the summer months in Utah.

31% of drivers who hit a motorcycle were turning left. Motorcycles are smaller and difficult to see, especially in your blind spot. Motorcycles may appear farther away than they actually are and it may be difficult to judge their speed. Experts suggest giving riders lots of space, even more space than a regular vehicle.

5. Sign Up for a Safety Class

Washing: 30 minutes
Drying: 60 minutes
Putting laundry away: 7-10 business days

If you’ve got a big family you KNOW the laundry struggle. Making sure every item gets to the right person’s room after being washed can feel like mission impossible.

Now imagine that same struggle in a large hospital system.

Because our teams relied on donated onesies and swaddles—each unique in size, color, and style. After laundering, returning the same items to the right hospital or floor was tricky—and sometimes, items ended up in the wrong place, leaving some units short.

But our NICU nurses and supply chain team had an idea!
• A standardized line of colorful, NICU-friendly onesies (hello, monitor-friendly snaps!)
• Soft, stretchy swaddles that work for all our tiniest patients
• And a unified system that means no more sorting headaches—and no more shortages.

Now, when the items return from Intermountain’s centralized Laundry Services, it doesn’t matter whose “room” these items end up in. All NICUs will use the same items while offering enough variety and function to keep, babies, parents, and nurses happy.

Same great care. Less laundry chaos.

PS Our NICU teams are still accepting donations for new clothes for NICU patients! They like to send babies home in new outfits. If you'd like to donate, click HERE: https://intermountainhealthcare.org/locations/primary-childrens-salt-lake-city/give

Spanish Fork Hospital has been recognized by the Lown Institute for outstanding social responsibility. We received an “A” grade on the 2025-26 Lown Institute Hospitals Index in nine categories (including social responsibility, value of care and patient satisfaction). AND we ranked top 5 in Utah in a further four (including social responsibility and patient satisfaction).

The Lown’s rankings are independent, we do not apply for or pay for consideration. Our caregivers achieved this honor through strong performance across metrics of health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care, out of more than 3,500 hospitals nationwide.

Intermountain Health as a whole ranked 29th in the nation out of 322 health systems, placing 2nd in outcomes of patient health and experience of care.

Congrats to all our hard-working caregivers who make Spanish Fork Hospital such a vital part of the community.

Meet Michelle, Becci, Alyson, and Diane—four incredible sisters raised in Provo who all now work for Intermountain Health in Utah County. Born at Utah Valley Hospital and brought up in a family of ten, these women were taught to serve, support, and show up for others. Today, they carry those same values into their work as caregivers, managers, and team players.

Becci, practice manager at Spanish Fork Clinic was the first to join Intermountain 30 years ago and eventually helped bring each of her sisters into the fold. “I did talk each one of these beautiful women into working at Intermountain,” Becci said with a laugh. “And they’ve made me proud. I’ve loved I invited them.” Michelle, a medical secretary at the Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Residency Clinic, said, “I’ve told my kids I don’t know what my parents did to keep this family close, but I want that same thing for them.”

They’ve rallied around each other through family trials, supported one another at work, and even cleaned up a mess of nails left behind at a campsite “just because that’s what our parents taught us to do.” “Our parents taught us to work hard, finish what we start, and be someone others could be proud of,” said Alyson, a practice manager for orthopedics and sports medicine in Provo. While many siblings grow apart with time, these four women only grow closer. “Growing up with sisters like this, you learn to rely on them,” said Diane, a financial navigator at the Utah Valley Cancer Center. “Even though we don’t work in the same department, I know I can reach out. That’s powerful.”

Their story is one of sisterhood, strength, and service—proof that when family values meet a mission-driven workplace, amazing things happen.

Spanish Fork got more recognition than ever at this season’s Intermountain Health L.O.V.E. awards.

The Hospital L.O.V.E. Awards (Living Our Values Everyday) recognize hospitals that meet high levels of excellence in at least three of six categories. Our hospital leadership accepted an award for Spanish Fork Hospital—one of only four hospitals to be recognized— for meeting thresholds of excellence in Quality, Patient Safety and Stewardship.

“Winning the Intermountain LOVE Award is a powerful recognition of the extraordinary work happening at Spanish Fork Hospital,” said hospital president, Megan Johnson. “Meeting three of the six domains—patient safety, quality, and stewardship—is no small feat. It reflects our unwavering commitment to Intermountain’s mission and our deep dedication to the patients and community we serve every day. This award is a testament to our caregivers’ passion, precision, and purpose.”

In addition to the hospital award, two caregivers from the Hospital and one from Spanish Fork clinic received individual awards.

Gail Tolzman has been a nurse for 15 years and was nominated by a patient who was brought to the hospital following a 911 call. The patient wrote “Gail listened not only to our words, but she saw our hearts. Her compassion and care towards my husband was the real deal. Gail’s actions gave us confidence in the quality of care we would experience at the Intermountain Spanish Fork Hospital. Personable, skilled and caring.”

Critical care technician Gabriela Lizarbe was nominated by a member of our emergency department who wrote “Gabi was the tech who trained me. She was so kind and patient. Gabi is there for anyone and wants to help patients as well as her coworkers. She doesn't make anyone feel like their problem is small. There is never an awkward moment while she is giving her care. Her full attention is on whoever she is speaking to.”

Natalie Thorpe won an award for her contribution to the orthopedic team at the Spanish Fork clinic. Her nomination noted that she “manages all aspects of surgery scheduling with precision and reliability…her deep understanding of the insurance landscape allows her to guide patients through their critical questions about surgical costs, alleviating stress and fostering trust in our practice.”

We add our congratulations to everyone and thank them for their service to the community.
