Nurse leader at Northern Nevada Medical Center, Alura, is an advocate for staff development and jumped at the opportunity to participate in our leaRN Clinical Ladder, which is a professional development program for nurses. In her first two projects, Alura was focused on quality improvement on the medical/surgical floor. She also chairs the hospital’s falls committee and has remained focused on continued staff education to support patient safety inside the hospital.
She shares, “when you have more involvement from staff and eyes on the patient, the patient is more likely to call for help rather than trying to get up and assist themselves. We focus on hourly rounding that is purposeful and put time into patients who are at high risk for falling. Our entire goal is to not let a patient fall or harm themselves while under our care and we are doing more to create a culture of learning and awareness to support this initiative.”
Alura is grateful for the opportunity to engage in learning and development and it has opened pathways for her to become a leader on her unit. She loves being an example to staff, which she shares is a great way to retain quality nurses; investing in staff and empowering them to support a department gives new nurses confidence and builds a strong team.
