Exciting news! 💚💙💚
My Forever Home and the Charles Lea Center recently celebrated a groundbreaking in Smithfield, NC for 10 new homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Built by Harbinger Homes, funded through Scioto Properties, and made possible by land generously donated by Floyd Development, this project will provide income-based housing and a supportive community for residents.
More than housing, this neighborhood will foster connection through shared meals, activities, and celebrations that bring neighbors together.
We’re proud to help make inclusive communities a reality! 💙💚💙

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Maria Arroyo 🌟
Bilingual Case Manager | Advocate | Chocolate Lover

Meet Maria Arroyo, a dedicated Bilingual Case Manager with HASCI, who has been part of the Charles Lea Center family for 7½ years. 💚 Maria values the strong sense of teamwork within the Case Management department and is grateful to work alongside a supportive team and supervisor who truly look out for one another. She believes there’s always something new to learn and admire from her Case Management co-workers every single day.

Maria was inspired to join CLC by a deep desire to serve others. She’s passionate about being a voice for individuals who cannot advocate for themselves and a trusted resource for families, helping them succeed and thrive through compassion and support.

In her role, Maria:
• Advocates for individuals and families to ensure they receive needed services
• Collaborates with agency providers to support individuals in reaching their goals
• Completes assessments and evaluations
• Monitors services to ensure consistent, quality support

Maria holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, which supports her thoughtful, person-centered approach to case management.

Outside of work, Maria is a proud mom of two, a self-proclaimed chocolate lover, and enjoys listening to music and spending time gardening. 🌱🎶🍫

Thank you, Maria, for being such a caring advocate and an important part of our mission! 💚

🎓 We are so proud of Gabby! 🎓

Please take a few minutes and watch this wonderful video celebrating Gabby on her graduation from the MAPS program in Tennessee! While we will certainly miss seeing her, we are oh so proud of everything she has accomplished.

People often ask what we’re doing in Tennessee, and this is it. Through our partnership with the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging, we manage the MAPS program, which launched just three years ago. Programs like MAPS create meaningful opportunities, growth, and real progress for the individuals we serve.

Gabby’s success is exactly why this work matters. 🌟

We are grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue building brighter futures in Tennessee.

Congratulations, Gabby - your CLC family is cheering you on! 🎉

✨ Celebrating Black History Month ✨
The Charles Lea Center recently came together for a meaningful and uplifting Black History Month celebration!
We enjoyed an exciting morning organized by our Focus Day Program that was filled with a most talented dance performance, a powerful soloist, inspiring classroom presentations, and more! Each of our classrooms researched and presented on influential Black leaders and trailblazers such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, President Barack Obama, Ray Charles, and many others.
It was an engaging, educational, and inspiring event that allowed us to reflect on the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact of so many remarkable individuals. We so appreciate all the time our staff contributed to make this such an amazing event!

We are proud to celebrate diversity, honor history, and continue learning together. ❤️🖤💚

🌟Staff Spotlight: C’Kala Humes 🌟
Innovation Coordinator | Tech & Inclusion Advocate | Plant & Turtle Parent

Meet C’Kala Humes, an Innovation Coordinator in Tennessee, who will be celebrating three years with the Charles Lea Center next month! 🎉

What C’Kala enjoys most about working at CLC is being part of the journey and growth of the participants they support while watching individuals achieve their goals and accomplish things they once thought were out of reach. 💚

C’Kala was inspired to work at the Charles Lea Center by the opportunity to be part of a community rooted in service, one that recognizes the importance of being a servant to others and creating meaningful, inclusive support.

In their role as Innovation Coordinator, C’Kala supports participants in the MAPs Program through innovation and technology, while collaborating with providers and stakeholders to identify needs and resources that promote greater independence and long-term success.

C’Kala brings an impressive educational background to the team, holding a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, a Master’s degree in Education, and a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science.

Outside of work, C’Kala enjoys spending time outdoors, staying active with sports and hiking, caring for their plants, and hanging out with their beloved turtle, A&M 🐢🌱.

Thank you, C’Kala, for your innovation, dedication, and commitment to empowering individuals at the Charles Lea Center ... we appreciate all that you do! 💚

Exciting Progress at the Charles Lea Center Nature Preserve at Lake Blalock! 🌿

We’re thrilled to share that Phase One of the Charles Lea Center Nature Preserve at Lake Blalock is progressing! This first phase includes the construction of our Event Center and Bath House, laying the foundation for a space where individuals of all abilities can connect with nature, learn, and explore.
This progress brings us one step closer to creating an inclusive outdoor environment for the people we support, their families, and our community.
A heartfelt thank you to the CLC Foundation and all of our generous donors for helping turn this dream into reality. Your support is building more than structures ... you’re building opportunities, access, and experiences that will last for generations.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this exciting journey! 🌳✨💚
