Today marks the start of the first ever Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week! As an allied partner with the Deaf community, the DC Breastfeeding Coalition fostered the initiation of the first-ever Deaf and Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Collective. The theme for this first-of-its-kind observance is "Close the Gap Bridge the Divide: Establish Breastfeeding Support Access."

The purpose of this initiative is to provide the nation's marginalized and underrepresented Deaf community with accessible breastfeeding education, support, and community, because language and breastfeeding access matters from birth! Follow Deaf & Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding to keep up with the observance's activities.

Happy Friday! In Honor of National Breast Feeding Month...
ALBA supports South Carolina Senate Bill 42 (S.42) mandates that health insurance plans and Medicaid must cover the services of certified lactation consultants and doulas. The bill, introduced for the 2025-2026 legislative session, requires coverage for both inpatient and outpatient services related to lactation and defines what constitutes a certified lactation consultant and doula. It also includes coverage for doula services during pregnancy and the postpartum period and will apply to health plans renewed on or after January 1, 2026.

Happy Thursday! Recently the Healthy Beginning Summit 2025 was held in Spartanburg at Wofford College.

"The Healthy Beginnings Summit brought together healthcare professionals, community leaders, families, and youth to focus on improving outcomes for mothers, infants, and children. Key themes included maternal health, breastfeeding support, and youth-led conversations on health and wellness.

The summit featured expert panels, interactive workshops, and community resource exhibits, creating space for education, empowerment, and advocacy. By fostering collaboration across the community, the event highlights strategies for building healthier families and stronger communities from the very start.”

I was honored to be a part of Health Beginning Summit 2025 where I spoke at 2 sessions about the benefits of breastfeeding on infant and maternal health outcomes as well as debunking some well known myths that surround breastfeeding in our society.

The audience was engaging and full of fabulous questions to take back to their loved one and clients. Taking part in that day was definitely a highlight of 2025! I’m grateful for the work so many powerful, caring individuals and organizations are doing to improve the health of SC families. I’m overjoyed to have been a part of such an event! -Dawn
