A “Poke Plan” is a way to prepare a child for an upcoming needle poke by practicing what to expect before, during, and after. Katie and her team at Child Life On Call also recommend child life specialists develop a “Pre-Poke Plan” where you gather helpful items that will set your pediatric patients up for success!
1. Procedural Preparation: Round up the supplies that your patient may encounter during this upcoming poke (alcohol swab, tourniquet, even the needle!). Some children are information seekers and will benefit from seeing some or all of the medical supplies ahead of time.
2. Coping Tools: Offering choices is vital when it comes to a successful poke plan, so come prepared with options for every step in the process! Some children may want a fidget toy, while others may benefit from deep breathing activities. Each child and each poke plan are unique!
3. Post-Procedure Praise: The procedure isn’t over as soon as the poke occurs. Children often need a moment to process, so offering a choice after the procedure as well (such as a character bandage, a sticker, or a prize) creates a positive experience and a perfect opportunity to praise them for a job well done.
