Irena Freystaetter Midwife

Irena Freystaetter Midwife I am a Certified Professional Midwife serving Upstate South Carolina. I graduated from The Midwives College of Utah in 2018.

In 2024, I opened Bloom Midwifery, LLC in Greenville, South Carolina. I have always been fascinated with pregnancy, birth and babies. I love learning about the amazing miracle that is the human body, and especially everything it does during pregnancy and birth, so when I heard about midwifery I knew that it was what I wanted to pursue. Getting to know a woman and her family prenatally, holding the sacred space and watching her find her strength through her birth, and supporting her through the postpartum period is the most rewarding career I can imagine. I have been studying at the Midwives College of Utah since January 2014, and began my apprenticeship at All About Babies in 2015.

💫The Placenta Lesson 💫
One of my favorite things to do is show my clients around the amazing placenta after the birth! Here are some placenta fun facts:
⭐️ The placenta is baby’s DNA, their organ!
⭐️ There are actually two layers of the amniotic sac, sometimes they separate during birth and I can show mom both afterwards.
⭐️ Mom and Baby’s blood don’t typically mix during pregnancy, the placenta acts as a sort of filter letting nutrients in and waste out without mixing blood products.
⭐️ Placentas vary in size just like babies do! I’ve seen wide variations, as long as baby gets the nutrients they need it has done its job!

Did you get to see your placenta?

Thank you so much to all the families who have trusted me with their care, all the birth workers who have supported me, and my family who have cheered me on. I am so excited to see what the future holds for me and Bloom ☺️🌸

Many people wonder if they need a doula and a midwife. The short answer: yes! We have different roles during your pregnancy and birth, and I love having doulas on the team to support my clients.

Did you have a doula on your birth team? What did you love about them?

Our Story

I have always been fascinated with pregnancy, birth and babies. My mom says that while my siblings happily examined exotic animals at the zoo, I ran from stroller to stroller examining babies. As I grew I loved learning about the human body, I soaked in anatomy and physiology classes, got certified as an EMT the summer before my senior year of high school, and headed off to college determined to pursue medical school. However, as I learned more about the medical system, I began to feel that being a doctor may not be the right fit for me. When I heard about midwifery I knew that it was the fit I was looking for. I loved that midwifery would allow me to spend time with my clients, get to know them, and provide individualized care and information. Getting to know a woman and her family prenatally, holding the sacred space and watching her find her strength through her birth, and supporting her through the postpartum period is the most rewarding career I can imagine. And of course, how could I turn down getting to be with all those sweet mamas and babies! After four years of wonderful learning at the Midwives College of Utah, a two year apprenticeship in Argyle, Texas, and having a baby of my own, I graduated and became certified as a Certified Professional Midwife in April of 2018. I am so grateful to get to do my dream job and bear witness to the everyday miracle that is pregnancy and birth.
