How often have you been to a class and been told to belly breathe? And that this is the optimal way to breathe.

Let’s get down to it because this isn’t always the most helpful breathwork cue!

Pushing your stomach out ≠ proper diaphragmatic breathing.

Here’s the difference:

✨ True diaphragmatic breathing = 360° expansion
Your diaphragm contracts and moves downward, creating expansion not just in the front (belly), but into the sides and back of your ribcage.

🚫 “Belly pumping” only pushes the abdomen forward
This often skips full ribcage expansion and can limit how effectively your lungs fill with air.

🧠 Why it matters:
Research in respiratory physiology shows the diaphragm works with the ribcage to optimise ventilation, not just the abdomen.
Studies on diaphragmatic breathing also show better oxygen exchange and improved breathing efficiency when the ribcage expands fully.

Try this instead:

Place your hands at the base of your ribcage

Inhale → feel your ribs expand **front, sides, and back**
Take note, are the hands just moving forward and back? Or are you getting lateral movement too? This is what we are aiming for!

Exhale → ribs soften and return

Repeat 10x

Less forcing. More expansion.

That’s real breathing. 🫁✨

A gentle reminder that the air we move through our bodies is the same air that wraps around forests, oceans, and every living being. With each inhale, we receive. With each exhale, we give back.

Take a moment to slow down. Notice your breath. Notice the ground beneath you. Notice how connected it all is.

This practice isn’t just about feeling better — it’s about remembering we belong here, and caring for the world that holds us.
