Today we’re honoring someone whose work has quietly shaped the lives of so many in the Black Hills. Or business co-founder, colleague, mentor, and dear friend, Susan Terveen, recently stepped into retirement at the end of April 2026.
Some people build careers. Susan built places where people could tell the truth.
She earned her Licensed Professional Counselor credential in 2010, followed by her LPC-MH certification in 2011, deepening her commitment to serving individuals, couples, and families with skill, wisdom, and heart.
In 2013, Susan partnered with Carolyn Short to open a Stronghold Counseling office in Spearfish, helping introduce a faith-friendly approach to clinical counseling in the Northern Black Hills and creating a space where healing, courage, and connection could take root. In July of 2020, that vision evolved into our own private practice, Spearfish Counseling, a chapter Susan helped shape with the same steady presence and quiet determination that has defined her entire career.
For nearly two decades, Susan has done the sacred, often unseen work of sitting with people in their hardest moments: offering perspective, compassion, honesty, and hope. She has mentored fellow clinicians, encouraged emerging professionals, and left fingerprints on this community that will remain for years to come.
Now Susan begins a new chapter as she joins her husband, Morris, in retirement, enjoying life at home in Spearfish, traveling, exploring new hobbies, and spending treasured time with their children and grandchildren.
Susan, thank you for the lives you’ve touched, the profession you’ve strengthened, and the example you’ve set for all of us.
You will be deeply missed. And you will always be part of the story of Spearfish Counseling.
With love and gratitude,
Your Spearfish Counseling colleagues
