Registered Nurse, Health Coach, Certified Personal Trainer, and Pain-Free Mobility Specialist I was born and raised in MN. I graduated in 2007 from Concordia in Moorhead, MN with a bachelor's degree in nursing. I have worked in the ICU, at a surgical hospital, and an orthopedic clinic. I have always had a passion for health and wellness and enjoy exercise and healthy lifestyle. In 2019, I was diag

nosed with an autoimmune disease after several years of debilitating and worsening hip, back, shoulder, and neck pain. Ankylosing spondylitis as a painful disease in which your immune system is triggered abnormally and attacks your pelvis, spine, shoulders, and other body parts. I was not satisfied with taking biologic injections to suppress my immune system (and thereby increasing my risk for not being able to fight out bacteria and viruses) and taking anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen, aleve, celebrex, or meloxicam. These drugs can affect your kidney function and are associated with many other side effects. I was introduced by the one of the surgeons I work with, to functional medicine (which finds the ROOT cause of disease and aims to balance your body systems, rather than disguise your , symptoms with more and more medications). I also discovered Foundation Training, which is a set of exercises to strengthen your core and major muscle groups, and stabilizes your spine and joints; thereby reducing pain and preventing injury. Throughout my professional nursing journey, I have seen many patients suffering from chronic disease - due to a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, unresolved trauma, and excessive stress. Even those patients who've had surgery, are on the newest and greatest medications, and receive injections; continue to struggle and develop more and more health problems. My heart literally aches to see these people struggle and not get answers they need to improve their quality of life. So I researched, listened to podcasts from experts in preventative care, and chose the health coaching certification through Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I was tired of Western medicine and not looking at the whole person, and instead only treating the symptom. Don't get me wrong - there's definitely a place for surgery and medications, and I have a great deal of respect for all the healthcare providers I've worked with. But when I struggled to get through each day without significant pain, and my mood was affected - I decided I needed to do things a different way. And also to be a pioneer for the thousands of people like me who were just given a pill and told to come back in 6 months. I began to see how daily lifestyle habits can truly reverse chronic pain, and also prevent future disease. It amazes me that simple nutrition and exercise programs aren't covered by insurance, rather than waiting until patients develop full blown disease and medications and surgery are needed to save their lives. We humans are complex organisms. Body, mind, and spirit. There is so much that impacts our wellness, and much of that is never even discussed in a doctor's office. This became very apparent to me when COVID started and the media and much of the healthcare field shoved masks and vaccines on everyone, rather than education about simple self-care such as eating the right foods; moving your body to strengthen your muscles, lungs, and immune system; practicing deep breathing; and stress management. Through my health coach training, I have also learned how important community and socialization really are to the human psyche. Look at the Blue Zones - all those areas have ONE things in common: COMMUNITY. My passion is to bring our healthcare model back to the basics: getting to the root of the problem, and to educate and empower people to be the very best version of themselves!!! I am married and we have two children, Wyatt and Emma. We have lived here since 2015. We also have a dog, Kota and a cat, Pooh Bear. We live outside of Spearfish and enjoy living in the country. We love the outdoors - camping, going to the lake, swimming, fishing, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and biking. I love all forms of fitness - yoga/pilates, strength training, Barre, and Zumba. I enjoy cooking for my family and love trying new recipes. My husband is a hunter so we process our venison, and our kids enjoy it as well. I love to unwind with a good book and glass of wine. I also practice meditation and deep breathing. I enjoy getting together with my girlfriends - whether it's over a glass of wine, cup of coffee, shopping, or a nice meal. I LOVE Spearfish and meeting new people out in the community. I am so proud to be a part of this community and would love to talk about health and wellness to anyone who is interested!

THE TRUTH ABOUT HORMONES 🙋

I see so much hype about HRT (hormone replacement therapy) nowadays...and the truth is (yes, even the "bioidentical ones" - news flash, these aren't a "natural supplement," they are still chemically manufactured):

Our hypothalamus interacts with our pituitary gland and effects the adrenals, thyroid, ovarian/testes, and liver. Therefore, if we have dysfunction in ANY of those areas (excess stress, sluggish liver, underperforming thyroid), then it will ultimately affect our s*x hormones.

Here's what I see a lot of: women who are on intense exercise programs, working in a high-demand and stressful job, raising kids, managing their households, and then trying to "cut calories" because they aren't losing the weight...or just simply not getting enough of the right nutrients (maybe skipping meals because they're so busy), or eating a lot of fast/processed foods. There is also a lot of emotional discord that plays into our nervous system and hormones as well. You CANNOT exercise your way out of trauma/heartache/unresolved conflict.

Here's what happens...
Our livers get sluggish (we can't detox properly)
Our nervous systems get dysregulated (aka "adrenal burnout/fatigue")
Our thyroid doesn't work like it should (and yes, your TSH can still be "normal")
Our mood is affected (depression/anxiety)
Our energy and motivation tanks.

I get why women are quick to start taking HRT, but you CAN stabilize your hormones WITHOUT taking birth control or synthetic/bioidentical hormones.

I love digging in and helping women get to the root cause of their symptoms. It can take some trial and error, lifestyle adjustments (most of us need to DO LESS), and patience...but I believe that using natural approaches is always the better method.

P.S. Thank you for my professional pictures!!!

LONGEVITY

In my opinion, it’s THE best gift you can give yourself. Strong muscles make strong bones, which protects you from falls and fractures.

You’re darn right - I’ve got my 85 year old ladies deadlifting and squatting. These ladies are staying active, healthy, and out of the nursing home.

Making the golden years ENJOYABLE and as painless as possible…that’s my goal. It’s an honor to work with ladies and men of all ages. ❤️❤️❤️

As someone who has been personally touched by family members with neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia), I am deeply motivated to educate and empower people to stay independent, strong, and cognitively sharp for as LONG as they can.

The studies are clear. Staying active will keep your BRAIN sharpy. Being sedentary can contribute to cognitive decline. This is one of the many reasons why I've implemented my Strength For Life group class at Spearfish Martial Arts.

I am always learning and excited to bring programs such as this to the Black Hills (Brain Training - to prevent, slow and reverse cognitive decline). In the meantime, check out this article:

Foam rolling (self-myofascial release) belongs in the warm-up portion of a workout.

- The physical pressure of foam rolling influences the nervous system by affecting sensory receptors in muscles, fascia, connective tissues, and skin.
- When combined with deep breathing, it can elicit a parasympathetic response (relaxation), which will reduce stress and muscle tension...which also:
- Improves joint and tissue range of motion
- Produces a temporary analgesic (pain relieving) effect, similar to massage...which also:
- Enhances mobility and more fluid movement patterns.

Aside from the majority of people who have chronic aches and pains due to injuries, arthritis, or just consistent strength training; we are all carrying around a lot of stress. The demands of daily life, stressful jobs, spending hours hunched over at a desk or car, shuffling kids from school to activities, poor posture, insufficient deep breathing...these all contribute to a central nervous system that is locked in OVERDRIVE.

The goal is to take 2-3 minutes at the beginning of your warm-up, target 1 or 2 body regions, to reduce apprehension stored in the body and held by the mind.

It's all based on methodology and precise movements tailored to YOUR body.

This is the NUMBER 1 MISTAKE I see in the gym. If you're going to commit time to training your body, do it the right way. Neglecting to do so will result in injury and prevent you from reaching your goals.

This is how I travel 👇👇👇

Laptop, Functional medicine handouts, and highlighters! In my personal health journey and years of research, I’ve learned that it’s NOT necessary to pay thousands of dollars for labs, in order to get to the bottom of what’s driving your health problems…

Nor is it simply a matter of slapping on biodentical hormones and dozens of supplements.

So let’s get practical.
Take a look at the big picture:
- What is going on in your gut? (Do you have constipation, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, reflux, gas or belching, food intolerances)
- What’s your sleep like? (Can you fall asleep easily, do you wake frequently through the night, do you wake up exhausted)
- What’s your energy level throughout the day?
- What’s your dental and antibiotic history? (Have you had root canals, fillings, damaged teeth? How many lifetime antibiotics - for ear, sinus infections, etc)
- Do you have unresolved trauma or grief? (Death of a loved one, divorce, infertility, abusive relationships, injury or accident)

Chronic symptoms often reflect that our bodies are adapting due to a stimulus (infection, gut dysbiosis or leaky, inflammation, nutrient depletion, chronic stress)…not root dysfunction. In other words - if your thyroid is not functioning correctly, or your s*x hormones are low - the answer is not to just slap on thyroid or hormone replacement (no, not even the “bioidentical ones).
* There ARE times (infections and autoimmunity) when temporary microdosed hormones and specific supplements are needed, while the body is healing.

Let’s not forget the importance of a regulated nervous system/aligned spine. Think about how many nerves come out of eacSpearfish Martial Artsow those nerves communicate with our organs, and of course - our hormones!

We’ve got to look deeper and think smarter. That’s my mission.

Working hard to restore health. Determined to help my patients find the relief they deserve. Committed to always learning and adapting.
