Big smiles around here yesterday!
Dr. Grange got the sweetest surprise — one of our awesome patients brought her a Barbie with hearing aids!
Because honestly… what girl doesn’t love getting a Barbie? And one that rocks hearing aids? Even better!
We love seeing how toys are celebrating inclusion and helping kids see that hearing aids are totally amazing.
Huge thanks to Nancy for the thoughtful gift — we absolutely adore her and can’t wait to show her off in the office! 💕

If you have visited our Fairmont clinic, you may have noticed a piece of metal artwork situated by the window in our waiting room. Named "The Appointment", this piece is the creation of one of our dear former patients, Ted Kittleson. According to Ted himself, the scene features an audiologist helping out an "old cowboy." Ted gifted this to Dr. Nelson before he passed away in 2022 at the age of 101. An old cowboy himself, Ted was not only known for his welded pieces of art, but also for playing guitar and singing country western music. His legacy continues on through his children, who still perform together in the Kittleson family band.

We're snacking on "orejas" (which means "ears" in Spanish) in Spencer today! Orejas are a type of pastry popular in Spain, Mexico, and other parts of Latin America. They’re typically made from puff pastry that’s shaped into little ear shapes, coated with sugar, sometimes cinnamon, and then baked until it’s caramelized and crispy. Yum!

Our Spencer office will be closed this week due to construction. We’re having concrete work done out front to improve handicap accessibility, and continued flood repairs are happening inside.

We’ll be back to regular hours on Monday, July 7th.
📞 Staff is available by phone to help with any issues — please call, do not walk in. The building is not safely accessible during construction.

Thank you for your patience while we make these important updates!

Our Story

{Pictured above: Dr. Catherine Nelson Grange and Dr. Paul D. Nelson, Audiologists}

Dr. R. David Nelson was an audiologist on a mission. He had spent his professional life teaching the deaf and hard of hearing and performing diagnostic hearing tests for Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians. But he felt his true calling was to help hard of hearing people hear better with hearing aids. Nelson Hearing Aid Service began over 40 years ago in a small office in Spencer, Iowa. Dr. Nelson’s first desk was an old door propped up on cinder blocks. He saw patients while his sister answered the telephone. The first hearing aids he fit were large body worn hearing aids. They had trim-pots and were adjusted with tiny screw drivers.

Dr. Nelson dedicated his professional life to advocating for the best care for his hard of hearing patients. His small, one room office, grew to four clinics, serving 6 locations throughout NW Iowa and SE Minnesota. Two of his children, Dr. Catherine Nelson Grange and Dr. Paul David Nelson, followed in his footsteps. Both obtained their doctoral degrees in Audiology and moved home to Iowa to take over the family practice.

All diagnostic services are provided by licensed Doctors of Audiology and trained Audiologist Assistants, including: comprehensive hearing evaluations, pediatric hearing tests and tinnitus assessments. In addition to providing hearing services and products, they also specialize in tinnitus, pediatric audiology, custom hearing protection and musician monitors. As an independent audiology practice, they’re able to offer hearing aids from a variety of manufacturers, including: Unitron, Oticon, Phonak, Resound, Lyric, Signia, Starkey and more.
