Our Story
{Pictured above: Dr. Catherine Nelson Grange and Dr. Paul D. Nelson, Audiologists}
Dr. R. David Nelson was an audiologist on a mission. He had spent his professional life teaching the deaf and hard of hearing and performing diagnostic hearing tests for Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians. But he felt his true calling was to help hard of hearing people hear better with hearing aids. Nelson Hearing Aid Service began over 40 years ago in a small office in Spencer, Iowa. Dr. Nelson’s first desk was an old door propped up on cinder blocks. He saw patients while his sister answered the telephone. The first hearing aids he fit were large body worn hearing aids. They had trim-pots and were adjusted with tiny screw drivers.
Dr. Nelson dedicated his professional life to advocating for the best care for his hard of hearing patients. His small, one room office, grew to four clinics, serving 6 locations throughout NW Iowa and SE Minnesota. Two of his children, Dr. Catherine Nelson Grange and Dr. Paul David Nelson, followed in his footsteps. Both obtained their doctoral degrees in Audiology and moved home to Iowa to take over the family practice.
