Today, we pause to honor and remember Spencerport Fire District life member Robert E. Fowler, 29 years after his line-of-duty death. Bob was devoted to his family and his community, serving as a husband, father, educator, and volunteer firefighter.

On February 22, 1997, Firefighter Fowler was responding to an emergency call during extreme wind conditions when a tree fell and struck his vehicle. Bob was killed instantly while answering the call to serve. His 15-year-old son Tim, a fire Explorer at the time, survived the incident but was seriously injured and trapped inside the vehicle.

Bob’s legacy remains visible throughout our community. A section of Route 259 between Lyell Avenue and Nichols Street proudly bears his name as the Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway, formally dedicated in October 2023.

We also recognize and thank Bob’s wife, Gail, whose continued work with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation ensures his service and sacrifice are never forgotten.

A memorial honoring Firefighter Fowler stands in front of our firehouse at 175 Lyell Avenue for those who wish to learn more and pay their respects.

February is Heart Month ❤️ A perfect time to learn how you can save a life.

Every year, sudden cardiac arrest affects hundreds of thousands of people, and immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival. Knowing what to do in those first few critical minutes truly makes a difference. Consider taking a CPR class and empowering yourself with the skills and confidence to step in when it matters most. A few hours of training could mean a lifetime for someone else.

Congratulations to Spencerport FD’s own Ben Ketchum on successfully completing probation with the Gates Fire District! 👏🔥

Ben began his journey in our Explorer Post before becoming a volunteer firefighter with our organization, where he proudly continues to serve today. He represents the very best of our program and is a great example of how many of our Explorers go on to careers in emergency services.

We’re incredibly proud of you Ben. The residents of Gates are in excellent hands!

🚒 Small Act, Big Impact: Neighbors Clear Hydrant for Firefighters 🚒

Spencerport firefighters were dispatched at 6 PM today for the report of a chimney fire on Kress Hill Drive. The first unit arrived to find nothing showing from the home. After investigating, crews located creosote buildup on the inside of the chimney, but there was no active fire. Everyone inside the home was able to safely exit the home before we arrived.

A special thank you to the neighbors on Kress Hill Drive, Helmar Drive, and Harvey Lane who took the initiative to dig out the nearest fire hydrant directly across the street, well before this call came in. Thankfully, it was not needed, but having a cleared hydrant allowed our firefighters to quickly hook up to it and then focus on other critical tasks. Seconds mattered this evening and we very much appreciate the extra care from Kress Hill/Helmar/and Harvey neighborhood!

Spencerport firefighters were dispatched shortly before 5:45 this morning for a reported livestock barn fire on Chambers Street. Crews arrived to find a 10’ x 10’ barn heavily involved, but quickly knocked down the fire, preventing it from spreading to an adjacent barn that housed several goats.

The goats were able to shelter in place and were not injured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Thank you to Churchville Volunteer Fire Department and Chili Fire Department for responding along with us!

🚒 Seconds Matter: Clear a Fire Hydrant Near You 🚒

This video shows a side-by-side comparison of how long it takes firefighters to hook up to a fire hydrant, one that’s buried in snow and one that’s already cleared. The difference may seem small, but during an emergency, those extra seconds matter.

🔥 We ask our community members who live near a hydrant to help by clearing at least 3 feet in all directions around hydrants, and to also clear a path from the hydrant to the street so firefighters can work quickly and safely.

🔥 If you’re clearing a hydrant, please be careful and watch for passing vehicles, especially near roadways.

🔥 A big shout-out to Firefighter Evan Contreras, who did a great job quickly clearing this hydrant out. Unfortunately, many hydrants we encounter are buried even deeper, adding more time during critical operations.

Help us help you when every second counts. Thank you Spencerport!🫶

Hydrant Heroes in Action!
Our youngest members were hard at work this week, helping dig out approximately 15 fire hydrants after the recent snowfall. Awesome job and thank you for stepping up! 👏

With winter weather sticking around, this is also a great reminder that we’re always looking for help keeping hydrants clear, especially after snowy weekends like this past one.

If you’re digging out a hydrant, please use caution near roadways, wear bright or reflective clothing, and stay aware of traffic.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep our community safe! ❄️🚒

Help us help you! ❄️🚒

With an upcoming snowstorm in the forecast, we’re asking residents to please take a few minutes to clear snow and ice from fire hydrants near their homes. Please clear at least 3 feet around the hydrant and create a clear path from the road to the hydrant. Clear, visible hydrants allow firefighters to quickly establish a water supply, helping us protect lives and property when every second counts.

We also recommend keeping exhaust and vent pipes around your home clear of snow and ice to ensure proper ventilation and help prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into your home.

A few minutes of effort after the snow stops can make a huge difference. If you clear a hydrant near you, post a photo in the comments and help us spread the word! Thank you for being great neighbors and for helping keep the Spencerport community safe this winter!
