The Committee on Genetics provides the following guidelines on CYSTIC FIBROSIS:
It is important that CF screening continues to be offered to women of reproductive age. it is becoming increasingly difficult to assign a single ethnicity to individuals. It is reasonable, therefore, to offer CF carrier screening to all patients. Screening is most efficacious in non-Hispanic white and Ashkenazi Jewish populations.

89% of Rutherford County is Caucasian. One in 25 Caucasians have an abnormal Cystic Fibrosis (CF) gene. If you have an abnormal CF gene and your partner also has an abnormal CF gene, you have a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with the CF disease. CF is a disease that affects your lungs and digestive tract. There is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis. It is important to have a simple CF test to find out if you have an abnormal CF gene.
