Spinal Traction

Spinal Traction or Spinal Decompression is a modality that we use extensively in Physical Therapy. We use spinal traction for neck as well as low back problems.

As we get older, we all shrink to some extent. Our discs lose water content and our vertebrae lose mineral content. Many of the patients we see have Spinal Arthritis or Degenerative Arthritis. The spaces between the vertebrae are very narrow and often cause pinching of the nerves that exit by them.

Traction helps to stretch, gap, decompress or separate the vertebrae, relieving pressure on the spine, muscles and nerves. If traction in the clinic is successful, home traction can be recommended.
