International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On January 27 the world commemorates International Holocaust Remembrance Day. This is a United Nations observance that honors and remembers the tragedy of the Holocaust and the millions of people who lost their lives at the hands of the N**i government.

The 27th was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the date when, in 1945, Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest concentration camp operated by the N**is.

Helping Older Adults With Grief

Older adults may not experience or express grief in the same way as other adults. Older adults often have many major losses within a short period of time. For example, an older adult who loses a partner may suffer many losses, including financial security, a best friend, and social contacts. The natural aging process brings many losses, such as loss of independence and physical strength. What is considered a minor loss may bring memories and feelings about a previous greater loss.

As we approach the Chung Yeung Festival, it’s a time to reflect on the significance of honoring our ancestors. Chung Yeung Festival or Double Ninth Festival (重陽節, pronounced chung yeung jit in Cantonese or chóngyáng jié in Mandarin) is a day when Hong Kong people climb up high mountains, clean their ancestors' graves, and eat cleansing foods to flush away stagnant energy.

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Here are some tips for preparing for a mammogram: 🌷 (share this with a family member, or friend. 💗)

1 - Schedule your appointment - If you menstruate, try to schedule your mammogram for the week after your period, when your breasts are usually less tender.

2 - Avoid certain products - Don't wear deodorant, antiperspirant, powder, lotion, cream, or perfume on your breasts or under your arms on the day of your mammogram. These products can appear as white spots on the x-ray.

3 - Bring prior mammograms - If you're getting a mammogram at a new facility, you can bring a CD with your previous mammogram images so the radiologist can compare them to your new ones.

Assisted living communities: what do they offer? (3 tips)

1) Assisted living is designed for older adults who need certain levels of medical and personal care. It provides a perfect balance between independent living and access to healthcare services. Residents in assisted living communities can live in their own apartments, but they have the comfort and security of knowing that help is available if they need it.

2) Before you even start to look at specific assisted living communities, it's important to take some time to consider both present and future care requirements. Choosing a community that offers a range of care levels has significant advantages, particularly regarding future peace of mind.

3) Planning for assisted living costs can feel a bit overwhelming. Assisted living is a big financial decision that can seem much harder to understand than a simple mortgage or rent payment. That's why it's so important to understand what you can afford before making you start considering locations.

You may want to look for a financial advisor or financial planner who has worked with seniors before and is specialized in the field. Such experts are likely to know details about assisted living costs and complexities, while a general financial advisor may not.
