Lifestyle Habits That May Help Slow Aging.

The following lifestyle habits have been shown to help the body function in a way that appears younger than a person’s chronological age: regular physical activity, quality sleep, effective stress management, not smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and eating a nutrient-rich diet centered on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Dark Chocolate Compound Linked to Slower Biological Aging?

Researchers from King’s College London report that higher blood levels of theobromine—a natural compound found in cocoa—were associated with a younger biological age relative to chronological age. These findings suggest that regular consumption of theobromine-rich dark chocolate may be linked to lower oxidative stress and inflammation, improved mitochondrial and vascular function, and other cellular processes that help maintain more accurate cell division as aging progresses.

Nearly Half of Chronic Low Back Pain Patients Have Another Chronic Pain Condition.

Among a group of 285 adults with chronic low back pain, researchers found that 45% had at least one chronic overlapping pain condition (COPC)—such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, or fibromyalgia—with a quarter having two or more COPCs. Further analysis revealed that chronic low back pain patients with at least one COPC experience significantly worse pain, greater anxiety and depression, more fatigue, and poorer physical functioning than those with low back pain alone.

1 in 8 Teens Show Signs of Hearing Loss.

Examinations of more than 3,300 Dutch teenagers revealed 13% exhibited signs of noise-related hearing damage, with roughly 6% experiencing permanent hearing loss by age 18. The research team attributes these issues to frequent exposure to loud recreational noise—from earbuds, concerts, and fireworks—as a key risk, emphasizing the need for early screening, prevention, and safer listening habits during adolescence.

The Effect of Different Exercises on Postmenopausal Metabolic Health.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of data from 142 randomized clinical trials found that different fitness approaches offer distinct metabolic benefits for postmenopausal women. The researchers reported that combined resistance and aerobic training has the greatest effect on body mass index and triglyceride levels; aerobic exercise most significantly improves body fat percentage and cholesterol readings; resistance training has the largest impact on waist circumference, blood glucose levels, and total cholesterol; and mind-body exercises most effectively support blood pressure and insulin sensitivity. These findings suggest that exercise recommendations should be tailored to each woman’s unique metabolic profile and fitness goals.

Just 20 Minutes of Exercise Twice a Week May Prevent Dementia.

Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, researchers found that older adults with mild-cognitive impairment were less likely to progress to dementia over an eight-year time period if they exercised at moderate-intensity—like brisk walking, for example—for at least 20 minutes twice a week. The findings demonstrate the ability of regular physical activity to delay or possibly prevent dementia.
