In therapy, we help people understand that the goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety completely. That is unrealistic, as anxiety is a normal response to stress, potential danger, or uncertainty. It acts as a natural survival mechanism, triggering the fight-or-flight response to help the body prepare for or cope with challenges.
The real work is noticing anxiety when it appears and responding differently. Each time we face an anxious moment and move through it, the brain gathers new information. Exposure therapy activates the amygdala, the brain’s threat detector, so it can update its learning.
Over time, these experiences reshape the nervous system, and our confidence grows in our ability to handle and respond to anxiety differently. Feel it to heal it.💚
