Welcome back to our Long Winter’s Nap series! This week we are highlighting the overlooked and often unfairly characterized tool in our better sleep toolbox - the nap! In our fast paced and performance culture we often label those who embrace naps as lazy or lacking focus. But Sara Mednick’s research suggests that naps not only improve our stamina, alertness and creativity, AND combat fatigue making us more productive, naps can also positively impact our sleep at night. Just make sure your nap wraps up more than three hours before bedtime. This week try recharging with a 20 minute, 40 minute, or even a quick 6 minute power nap on your lunch break and put the research to the test. Discover the positive impacts a nap mid-day can have on your day (and night). Happy napping!

CoreFit members hit the beach this past weekend in culmination of months long training. Over on the Oregon coast Tanis, Jay, Kathrane, Annaliese and Allison ran the Perpetua Coast 50k, which took them through rainforest, onto the beach and back up along trails hugging the coast line. On Sunday, Diane tore through the Perpetua Coast 20-mile course. Further south in Long Beach, Jasper and Brian took on 26.2 miles and crossed the finish line of the Long Beach marathon! We’ve watched them putting in the work and miles this summer, and could not be more excited to celebrate everything they’ve accomplished! Where will your Fit Life take you?

Welcome back to our Long Winter’s Nap series! Our 4th installment has us taking a deeper dive into sleep itself. Those 7-9 hours that we’re striving for are made up of 4-6 sleep cycles. Each cycle is broken down into four stages. We’re most familiar with REM sleep for its vivid dreams, but before REM sleep can unfold we first have to pass through three stages of non-REM sleep.
💤 The first stage of Non-REM sleep lasts only a couple minutes and is the transition from wakefulness to sleep. The slowing of your heart rate and breathing begin.
💤 They continue to drop, along with your body temperature, during Non-REM stage 2 which makes up the largest percentage of your sleep.
💤 Next up is Non-REM stage 3 where the really good stuff takes center stage - tissue repair and growth, cell regeneration and the strengthening of the immune system. It’s the deepest sleep stage, restorative, and responsible for health promoting activities that have long term impacts.
💤 Which brings us to REM sleep - the final stage - where the heart rate and breathing speed back up and your brain activity rivals when you’re awake. The first time you cycle through the sleep stages, REM sleep lasts approximately ten minutes but that increases with every cycle, with the potential to last 30-60 minute your last cycle through. Cutting your sleep short means fewer cycles and shorter periods of REM sleep.

Allow your expanded understanding of how sleep unfolds to empower you when demands on your time make it tempting to cut your sleep short. Track your sleep this week using a watch or ring and get a glimpse into your own personal sleep patterns. Happy Zzzzz’s!

We are intimately aware of the importance of sleep when it comes to how rested and awake we feel the following day. There are entire industries - coffee, tea, energy drinks, soda, caffeinated protein bars, caffeinated mints and gum - waiting in the wings, eager to help us out if we don’t get enough. But the importance of sleep - and the impact of not getting enough - extends well beyond the following day. Lack of sleep is a risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, even dementia. Your immune system takes a direct hit when you fail to get adequate sleep, putting you at increased risk of infection and inflammation. Beyond the physical ramifications of cutting your sleep short, falling short of the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep every day can impact your mental health, concentration, memory, and mood. Allow your body to undergo the maintenance processes that only occur during sleep, and reap the immediate and longterm benefits. Want to improve your sleep but unsure where to start?
