Dear Sangha and Friends,

We hope this message finds each of you well with 2021 almost at an end. Lama has expressed that this has been a very good year for all of us to practice dharma. We have covered many topics on our Sundays together, including most recently the profound teachings of Dzogchen. In 2021, Lama was able to reach many people and was able to genuinely touch many peoples hearts.

Rinpoche also mentioned on several occasions that he has seen great progress in the dharma practitioners of our Sangha and is very happy to be a witness to these profound changes.

In the coming year, beginning on January 2nd and through the Spring, Lama is going to offer the teachings on "Transforming Suffering and Happiness Into Enlightenment'' by Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. This sacred text is beneficial for all levels of dharma practitioners. These online teachings have been going well, with Lama mentioning most recently that he considers this for the time being to be our digital temple. We hope that many of you can join with us for this amazing teaching. All current monthly sangha members have received the link.

Happy Holidays! 🙏

Hello friends,

Today I wanted to tell you about a special opportunity for joining as a group to accumulate this mantra. A close Lama friend of mine, Lama Drimed Lodru here in the Bay Area, is hosting a nightly Zoom hour from 7:30-8:30pm. It is very impressive how professional the practice setup is, with very clear visualizations…you won’t be disappointed. :) For today’s session at 7:30pm they will also be performing a special bardo recitation for the deceased. Please feel free to join, this is an ongoing nightly practice. It’s wonderful to have access to group practice like this. We should all use our modern technologies in ways that benefit the world right now!

The accumulation of this mantra are threefold: 1. Reducing the virus, 2. Freeing people from the suffering of the virus (physical and mental/direct and indirect), 3. Helping those in the bardo as a result of this virus.

Hello everyone, please carefully observe this video recording, which I took today, and take a moment with contemplation and apply it to your life.

This bird is confused, just like everyone else. This bird thinks his partner or friend is there in the mirror. He went back and forth for hours in this way. Literally, he was stuck there mentally with the misperception of his own reflection.

Little bird, don’t you think you should let go and free yourself? Or are you demonstrating that we are all stuck with the misperception of our own reflection, just like you.

Maybe you are saying, “Let it go.” Otherwise, we will be stuck, just as you are, with attachment to our own reflection.

Silly bird, today you are my teacher!

✨~Khyabje Dilgo Khyentse ✨

At present we perceive samsara as something we have to reject and nirvana as something we have to attain. Now while this is correct according to relative truth, according to absolute truth the nature of the afflictive emotions and actions that we are supposed to reject is nothing other than emptiness. When we realize the dharmakaya, which is free from true existence, we will know that all perceptions are similar to a dream or an illusion and we will no longer crave these phenomena. As it is said, 'While there is attachment, there is no view.' And the absence of attachment is the supreme view.

DĂśDJOM RINPOCHE

Post-Meditation

After formal sitting meditation, in everyday activities continue this light spacious awareness throughout and gradually awareness will be strengthened and inner confidence will grow.
Rise calmly from meditation; don’t immediately jump up or rush about, but whatever your activity, preserve a light sense of dignity and poise and do what you have to do with ease and relaxation of mind and body. Keep your awareness lightly centered and don’t allow your attention to be distracted. Maintain this fine thread of mindfulness and awareness, just flow.
Whether walking, sitting, eating or going to sleep, have a sense of ease and presence of mind. With respect to other people, be honest, gentle and straightforward; generally be pleasant in your manner, and avoid getting carried away with talk and gossip.
Whatever you do, in fact, do it according to the Dharma which is the way of quieting the mind and subjugating negativities.

Shantideva's Aspiration Prayer to the World

In the spiritual energy that relieves
The anguish of beings in misery and
Places depressed beings in eternal joy
I lift up my heart and rejoice.
In the ocean-like virtue of the Bodhimind
That brings joy to all beings
And in accomplishing the well-being of others,
I lift up my heart and rejoice.
To the Buddhas of the ten directions
I join my hands in respect
Let blaze the light of Dharmas truth
For the beings lost in darkness.

As long as diseases afflict living beings
May I be the doctor, the medicine
And also the nurse
Who restores them to health.
Thus was found this supreme ambrosia to dispel
The Lord of death, destroyer of life;
An inexhaustible treasure able to cure
The poverty of all sentient beings.
My body, every possession
And all goodness, past, present and future
Without remorse I dedicate
To the well-being of the world.

Bodhisattva Shantideva

Hello Everyone,
Today I want to show you a very simple breathing technique that can alleviate some of the suffering you are going through during this particular time in the world when acute stress and a strong sense of fear may come up. In this video, I am showing one full cycle, but you should perform three cycles of this breathing.

First, inhale. When you breathe in, relax and enjoy the breath. Enjoy it with a sincere appreciation. When you breathe in, visualize the freshness of the breath. Recognize the pristine nature of the wonderful air that is being inhaled.

Now hold your breath steady in your body. As long as you can, you should hold the breath while identifying your physical pains and mental and emotional disturbances.

Then exhale. When you breathe out, let the exhalation release you of both your physical and mental stress. Do this completely and wholeheartedly, and realize you are authentically free from the cause and conditions of this stress. Believe this to be true.

Practice this as long as you need, and then meditate with single-pointed concentration that is imbued with tranquility.

03/22/2020

Remember, it is not only being ill from the virus that causes suffering. Allowing afflictive emotions about the virus to overwhelm you is also suffering. For all of us regular human beings, this is a time for us to really contemplate our refuge vows, and dig deeper into our minds to see if we really are seeking refuge in the three jewels or not.

I am seeing that my practice has been a struggle as I have been studying the virus instead of the Dharma. I have been meditating on the short comings of our response instead of on my true nature. I have practiced anger instead of compassion.

If anyone would like to share or offer your own efforts in practice and developing compassion, please do.

Keith
