Join us on Thursday, May 29 at 12pm PST for our upcoming webinar, "Empathy Lens: Humanizing Images & Education for Reducing Stigma Against People Who Use Drugs".

Registration Required: https://wsu.zoom.us/meeting/register/Uo-gAhwzSturkN4htoQnEQ #/registration

Research has shown that using stigmatizing language and imagery related to substance use perpetuates harmful stereotypes and health barriers among this already vulnerable population. Finding realistic, high-quality images to support our information dissemination work is a constant struggle, as many asset collections, including fee-based stock photo sites, largely contain dehumanizing and/or factually incorrect graphics on this topic. The Empathy Lens project is a free online resource of accurate, compassionate, and non-stigmatizing images intended for health and service organizations to use in their outreach and educational efforts. In this session, we’ll talk about the impact of harmful images and language on stigma and related health barriers for people who use drugs and provide guidance on where to find and how to select accurate, non-stigmatizing information and images to use in your work.

A great upcoming webinar from our NW ROTAC (https://www.nwrotac.org/)

Bringing Harm Reduction Vending Machines to Rural Areas: Perspective From One Sheriff's Office

Harm reduction vending machines are an evidence-based strategy to provide essential harm reduction supplies. Similar to food or beverage vending machines, harm reduction vending machines can be placed and utilized to meet specific access disparities. Vending machines stocked with supplies such as sterile injection equipment, condoms, sharps containers, first aid kits, naloxone, and pregnancy tests play an especially important role in rural communities. Amid the opioid addiction and overdose crisis, harm reduction vending machines have the potential to expand access to life-saving materials and reduce overdose morbidity and mortality.

November is American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.

Increases in fentanyl and methamphetamine use have been particularly harmful to American Indian and Alaska Native communities across Region 10. In response, ROTAC has developed a page of tribal-specific resources. On it, you can find a list of tribally owned and operated OTPs, contact information to find an open bed at an OTP, and tribal organizations that provide training on substance use disorders.

We welcome your input about how we can better serve tribal communities.
