Quick trip to Washington DC this weekend for the Facial Plastic Surgery Board Exams! I have had the honor of working with the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for the past ~8 years. I serve on its committees and also help deliver its critical exams on an annual basis as an examiner. I am also an executive board member with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which has allowed me to provide overall direction for my specialty. I enjoy these national leadership opportunities and it is a true privilege to be a Double Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon.

What does it mean to be a Double Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon?
-
This is a protected term for those who have:
-
1) Completed a residency in either Plastic Surgery or Head and Neck Surgery and have performed all of the necessary components to become board-certified in that specialty.
2) Completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery or have significant surgical experience that matches fellowship-level training (typically requires many years).
3) Completed extensive testing, both written and oral, to ensure a very high level of knowledge in the specialty.
4) Compiled years of both case experience and practice experience in Facial Plastic Surgery, and submit hundreds of pages of operative reports for evaluation.
5) Amassed multiple professional recommendations, hospital privileges and licensure.
6) Submitted all of the required information and fee payment to the ABFPRS for assessment and evaluation (I sent many hundreds of pages in a box for my application).
7) Agree and adhere to the high moral and ethical standards which are set by the ABFPRS.
-
Besides all of this, once certified, the ABFPRS continues with at least annual assessments of the certificate-holder’s knowledge and conduct with additional testing and evaluation.
-
The process is rigorous, intensive and longitudinal. However, I think it is very necessary to ensure mastery-level standards are met for this unique specialty.
-
Now - good luck to all of the examinees this weekend! You will do great!
