🐾 The Ruff R***e is in the house!

Last week, Residents were treated to a tail-wagging good time as the Ruff R***e troupe gave an awesome St. Patrick's Day performance! The trainers and their talented pups Rudy, Amber, Wasabi, Rusty, Tesla, and Colby wowed the crowd with impressive tricks and playful routines set to music. The sport, known as canine musical freestyle, lets each dog bring their own personality and charm to the performance.

Thank you to the Ruff R***e for bringing such a joyful and entertaining show to our community! 🐶✨ Check out the videos of each performance to see their moves!

🍀 Woodcraft with Tommy John! 🪵

Residents got into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit at last month’s woodcraft project with Tommy John! We made little leprechauns out of pre-cut wooden pieces, which each person brought to life with colorful acrylic pens and a touch of creativity.

Tommy John, our Workshop Manager, then assembled and glued together each piece, then sprayed them with a protective finish for fire safety. He also attached magnets to the back, making it easy for residents to proudly display their festive creations right on their doors.

Take a look at everyone's handiwork on display — we think these little leprechauns turned out pretty lucky! 🍀

🍀 St. Patrick’s Day Celebration! 🍀

There was no shortage of Irish cheer at Riverview as residents gathered today to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! The room was filled with festive Irish music, setting the tone for a lively afternoon, and even some dancing!

Residents enjoyed a tasty treat of “Leprechaun Bait” snack mix and sipped on their choice of festive punch or green beer—because what’s St. Patrick’s Day without a little green? ☘️

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate!

Care Center Send-Off Celebration! 🏗️🥂

Residents, staff, families, and friends gathered together to honor a meaningful chapter in Riverview’s history—our beloved Care Center building. Those who had a connection to the Care Center over the years were invited to join us for a special send-off celebration as we prepare for an exciting new future on campus.

While the building has reached a point of disrepair and no longer meets the changing needs of today’s seniors, its legacy lives on through the countless lives it touched. In its place, we look forward to the future home of The Heights, which will bring fun new amenities, additional senior housing, welcoming community spaces, and new offices for our dedicated team members.

Before we say goodbye, we wanted to celebrate everything the Care Center meant to so many. Guests enjoyed a champagne toast and heartfelt words from our CEO, Danie Monaghan, and COO, Mike Schleigh, who reflected on the many memories and meaningful moments that took place within those walls.

The evening blended nostalgia with excitement for what’s ahead. Guests began in the Terrace, where they could learn about the Care Center during its prime, then made their way through the Herman-Legacy Garden—complete with heaters to keep everyone warm along the path. The celebration continued inside the Care Center dining room, where we looked ahead to the future of this space and what is to come. To keep the celebration fun and memorable, guests enjoyed themed construction hats, “demolition beverages,” and delicious wrecking ball meatball sandwiches! 🦺

For those feeling adventurous, we even opened a demolition room, where guests could put on safety goggles, grab a sledgehammer, and take the first swing! It was a memorable moment for many who wanted to take part in the symbolic beginning of something new. Be sure to check out the photos and video compilation of everyone giving the sledgehammer a try! 🔨

Overall, it was a wonderful afternoon filled with reminiscing and shared memories. While we say goodbye to the Care Center building, we look forward with excitement to the next chapter at Riverview.

👨‍🍳 Cooking with Tony & Tim! 👨‍🍳

Residents enjoyed a delicious and interactive Cooking with Tony and Tim demonstration! Our Dining Supervisor, Tim Jamison, showed everyone how to make a fresh and flavorful chimichurri sauce.

This classic sauce includes parsley, cilantro, garlic, oil, and vinegar blended in a food processor to create a bright, zesty topping that pairs perfectly with your favorite protein. To give everyone a taste, Tim and Tony served the chimichurri sauce over chicken skewers, and residents loved sampling the finished dish!

Be sure to check out the photos to see the demonstration and grab the recipe so you can try making this tasty sauce at home. 🌿✨

🎓 A Wonderful Visit from Eastern Washington University OT Students! 🎶

We were delighted to welcome EWU's Occupational Therapy students to Riverview for a special afternoon with our Memory Care residents in the Veranda! The students spent time connecting with residents through a variety of fun, hands-on activities designed to encourage creativity and engagement.

Together, residents and students crafted cardboard guitars, painted colorful birdhouses, made percussion instruments, and decorated a few potted plants to brighten the space. 🪴 Residents also put their instruments to good use by playing some simple rhythms and singing along to some music! These activities helped support fine motor skills, evoke memories, and improve communication while giving everyone the chance to work and create together. 🎶🎨

Thank you to the students and instructors from EWU for spending time with our residents and helping create such a lively and meaningful afternoon! We always appreciate opportunities for our community to connect across generations!

🎭 February Birthday Bash! 🎉

Last month, we celebrated our February birthdays with a splash of Mardi Gras magic! Residents were provided with colorful beads, festive masks, and bowties/hats for pictures!

We also had plenty of sweet treats as we toasted another year of life, such as Icecream Sundaes, sweet Iced Tea, and some White Russians for our more adventurous residents. 💜💚💛 We followed it up with a round of singing for our birthday stars. ✨

Happy Birthday to all our February residents! 🥳

🎻 EWU String And Piano Students! 🎹

Earlier this month, Riverview was visited by Eastern Washington University's string and piano students, who put on a wonderful show for our residents! The program was directed by Dr. Jody Graves and Dr. John Marshall, who both also performed. Yunju Cho gave a particularly amazing violin performance of Czardas, accompanied by Dr. Jodi Graves on piano!

Check out these pictures and video from the concert! The front and back of the program for the concert is also included, if you wish to know the names of any students or songs.

📰 Riverview featured in the Spokane Journal of Business! 📰

With the addition of a second building to Riverview’s upcoming expansion, the Spokane Journal of Business featured an article about Riverview Retirement Community to highlight some updated project details!

As previously reported in May, Riverview announced plans for The Heights, a four-story, 82-unit independent living building. Now, The Crest has been added as an additional new building. Soon to be located at the southwest corner of campus at 1777 E. Upriver Drive, The Crest will offer 31 condominium-style residences.

The Crest will feature five thoughtfully designed floor plans ranging from approximately 1,500 to 1,700 square feet. Homes will overlook the Spokane River and include quartz countertops, plank flooring, expansive windows, and private balconies.

The updated planned development, valued at $99 million, is scheduled to begin construction in April. Together, The Heights and The Crest will add 113 total independent living apartments and condominiums to the Riverview campus. As a nonprofit organization, Riverview’s project is supported by a bond through the Washington State Housing Finance Commission and an eight-year multifamily housing property tax abatement from the city of Spokane.

Riverview President and CEO Danie Monaghan is quoted in the article as saying: “The demand for senior living is tremendous, and we’re seeing more and more demand as the new generation starts to age into place. The Crest is definitely designed for more active adults. We’re focused on understanding that people who might move into The Crest may very well be employed in full-time jobs or transitioning.”

🐕 Riverview welcomes the Spokane County Sheriff's Department for training!

Last week, we were glad to invite the Spokane Sheriff’s Department and K-9 Unit to Riverview as they made use of our former Care Center building for training exercises.

With the building currently unoccupied and without power, it created the perfect environment for realistic nighttime practice. The SWAT team conducted night-vision searches and worked through simulated scenarios, allowing them to safely train in low-light conditions that mirror real-world situations.

The following day, the Sheriff's K-9 unit took their turn, running training drills throughout the building. 🐕 Many of these dogs pictured above are young and still learning the ropes — and it’s amazing to see how much time and dedication goes into their preparation. Police dogs in Washington typically complete around 400 hours of training over 4–5 months before they’re fully ready to serve. It was great experience for our furry friends!

We’re grateful to be able to assist the people (and pups!) who work hard to keep our community safe. Since the Spokane police, Fire Department, and EMTs do a tremendous amount of work to support Riverview every day, its great to be able to give back by providing our decommissioned care center for training. Thank you to the Spokane first responders for everything you do — and for putting our old space to such good use! 🐾🚓🚒🚑
