“You take good care of me and my people. You are one of us now.” These words were shared with WMS-contracted provider Michael Molnar, PA, (our 2025 provider of the year) as a patient entrusted him with items connected to the ancient Bering land bridge — pieces carrying thousands of years of history.
Among them:
-a carved walrus skull (a more modern piece),
-a walrus tooth shaped into a spoon,
-several small arrowheads and stone/wood tools,
-and a traditional qulliq oil-lamp stir stick.
Gifts like these are not souvenirs. They’re expressions of profound trust; something that can’t be rushed, assumed, or asked for. In remote communities at the edges of the world, trust grows slowly through presence, respect, and the kind of care that honors both the patient and their culture.
When that trust is extended, it is one of the deepest honors a clinician can experience.
