Hire Ability Spokane originated in 2004 when Hire Ability Day was created to provide individuals with disabilities on-the-job experiences and bring together the Spokane community for a luncheon to learn about the advantages of hiring people with disabilities. After 10 successful luncheons, the organization formed a new strategic plan to work directly with businesses and organizations to provide ed

ucation, support and assistance in connecting with capable, skilled individuals with disabilities seeking careers. Our work is not about charity. It is about diversifying our workforce, helping businesses find employment solutions that will impact their bottom line, and providing quality, professional-wage jobs for a largely untapped workforce.

July is Disability Pride Month—a time to celebrate the strength, creativity, and leadership of the disability community. At the Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council (DDC), we see this month as a chance to reflect on our mission: to advocate, promote, and implement policies and practices that create pathways to meaningful, integrated, and productive lives for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities over the life course.

Disability Pride Month began in connection with the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, and was first officially celebrated in 2015 on the law’s 25th anniversary. It’s a time to recognize the progress of the disability rights movement and the ongoing work toward full inclusion and equity in all areas of life.

One powerful symbol of this movement is the Disability Pride Flag. Created in 2019 by writer Ann Magill, who has cerebral palsy, the flag represents the diversity within the disability community. Each color stripe holds meaning—red for physical disabilities, gold for neurodiversity, white for invisible and undiagnosed conditions, blue for emotional and psychiatric disabilities, green for sensory disabilities, and a black background for those we've lost to ableist violence and neglect. The flag reminds us of both the barriers people face and the creativity and resilience that cut through them.

The DDC is proud to celebrate Disability Pride Month and honor the leadership of people with disabilities who continue to shape our communities and future.

🏀In honor of the start of March Madness, we want to share one of our favorite Gonzaga University employees, Darren! Not so long ago, Darren was working in a segregated workshop and earning less than minimum wage! 😡 When HireAbility Spokane hosted an interview event at GU, Darren was picked up immediately by Sodexo and now he loves his job at the COG! 💖
