🚒 Free “File of Life” Cards Available for Spotsylvania County Residents! 🏥❤️

The Spotsylvania Volunteer Fire Department is proud to offer “File of Life” cards — a simple but potentially life-saving tool for our community.

These cards provide first responders with quick access to important medical information during emergencies, especially when you or your loved ones may not be able to communicate. They include details like:

✅ Medications
✅ Existing medical conditions
✅ Emergency contact info

📍Keep it on your refrigerator — that’s where our first responders are trained to look!

💌 How to Get Yours:
Spotsylvania County residents can request up to 2 free cards per household by emailing us at: secsvfd@outlook.com

• Use “File of Life” as the subject
• Include in the body: how many you need, your name, address, and phone number

📝 Fill out the card in pencil so you can update it easily, and keep it current.

We also hand these out at public events — be sure to ask for one if you see us out and about!

This past weekend our Administrative members Tim Gates, Donna Morris, and Steve Milne had the opportunity to attend a large-scale simulation exercise focused on hurricane response and firefighter rehabilitation. The training was hosted by the Metro Richmond Flying Squad and brought together multiple support agencies to operate in a unified disaster response scenario.

The drill simulated a major hurricane impacting a region and included challenging scenarios such as structure fires, building collapses, and missing persons. Participating organizations included the Metro Richmond Flying Squad, Box 414 Association (Baltimore), and the Friendship Fire Association (Washington, D.C.).

Our members attended as observers with the goal of learning how these experienced teams set up and operate their rehab and support units in dynamic environments. It was incredibly informative to see how each group organizes their rehab areas, manages logistics, and deploys their vehicles during large-scale emergencies.

The knowledge our members gained from this exercise will be extremely valuable as we continue to develop and enhance our own Air and Light unit and scene support operations. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from these seasoned teams and look forward to applying these insights to better serve our own community.

Clearly visible house numbers are essential for emergency responders. If your address isn’t easy to see from the street, it can delay critical assistance from the Fire Department or Sheriff’s Office.

🚨 Public Safety Reminder 🚨

Last night, one of our Duty Chiefs was involved in an accident while responding to a call. Thankfully, no one was injured — but the emergency vehicle sustained damage.

The cause? A distracted driver who didn’t notice the lights and sirens.

This serves as a serious reminder:
Please stay alert behind the wheel. Keep music at a reasonable volume, avoid distractions, and always be aware of your surroundings — especially when emergency vehicles are approaching.

Your attentiveness keeps everyone safe — including those who are out there protecting and serving our community.
