“Not everyone knows medication types by their generic name, but you’ve probably heard of things like Va**um, Ativan, or Xanax. These are all types of benzodiazepines. These different forms can have their own half-lives, which is a measurement used to classify how long it takes a substance to go through your system, by half. These are just a few of the factors that can impact how long benzos are in your system.”

Knowing how long your prescriptions are in your system can be important when it comes to avoiding polysubstance use. Learn more about it in our blog post.

Polysubstance use is a high contributor to overdose. Knowing what to look for in a polysubstance overdose can be important when it comes to saving someone’s life. Here are some signs to look out for and keep in mind when it comes to this form of overdose.

- The symptoms can vary depending on what substances are in their body.

- Some of the most common symptoms include seizures, confusion, slurred speech, slowed heart rate, and unconsciousness.

- If you have any doubts or concerns, seek immediate medical help. Because of the Good Samaritan Law, you cannot get into legal trouble for seeking medical help during an overdose.

Accidental polysubstance use is more common than you might realize. Even just drinking some alcohol while on a medication where you shouldn’t is polysubstance use. If you ever think that you or a loved one accidentally participated in polysubstance use, here’s a simple guide on how to proceed.

- If you realize you’ve had too much to drink, or if you’ve taken another substance when you already had a different one in your system, don’t panic.

- Stop participating in substance use at that moment and let a trusted loved one know so they can help you look out for any signs that it might be impacting you negatively.

- If you’re taking a prescription medication per medical instruction, make sure you continue that usage like normal the next day.

- When you can, ask your doctor about any additional concerns.

Not all polysubstance use occurs intentionally. Sometimes we forget the things that can and cannot be taken while we’re prescribed certain medications. We’re all human, and that’s why having an at-home resource to learn more about your meds can be helpful - like rxlist, for example.

When you think of “drugs,” what comes to mind? For many, it might be a white, powdery substance, and this is a form that many substances come in! But how on earth can you tell them apart? Here’s a quick glance at some of the common substances that come in a powdery form and what might tell them apart from each other. Remember though - it’s best to NOT smell or taste them, as these are common ways these substances are consumed.

- He**in: comes in shades from white to brown and might be hidden away in aluminum or ziplock bags.

- M**h: white or off-white and also commonly in pill or crystal form too, instead of just powder. It’s odorless and bitter to the taste.

- Co***ne: white powder forms primarily. Some say it smells like gasoline or paint. Be careful not to inhale any if you try to smell it for identification.

If you want to learn more about how to tell these substances apart, our blog has in-depth articles about how to identify all three of these substances, as well as other informative articles on other topics, too.

“In 2021, over 41 million people were prescribed Adderall, which is a common substance used to assist those with ADHD. With over 22 states (New Mexico included) legalizing recreational ma*****na use, there’s a good chance that there is some overlap to be found between those who take Adderall and those who smoke w**d. But is it safe to combine the two?

Adderall and ma*****na both have their own list of side effects, which need to be considered equally when the substances are taken together. These side effects can interact with each other or potentially lead to difficult combinations when both substances are present in your system at the same time.”

Learn more about what happens when you mix Adderall and w**d in our blog post.
