Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
This is a major red flag! Sadly, most people will think they’re getting fresh fruits and vegetables and they won’t even realize what’s really going on!
There’s a hidden coating being added to fruits and vegetables that you can’t see, can’t taste, and can’t wash off. It’s all in the name of “sustainability”? It’s called Apeel, and it was created with a lofty goal: to reduce food waste and make produce last longer without refrigeration or plastic. Sounds great on the surface but here’s what they’re not telling you. Apeel is made from mono- and diglycerides and industrial byproducts that are also used in processed foods. It forms a barrier that slows spoilage, which means your fruit might look fresh, but how do you really know what you’re biting into? It’s water-resistant, which means you can’t scrub it off, and most people have no idea it’s even on their food. Originally backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (red flag) and promoted as a “green solution,” Apeel is now showing up in major grocery stores, on everything from avocados to apples and without clear labeling in many cases. The goal was to cut plastic, reduce food waste, and save money across the supply chain but at what cost to our health and transparency?
If you have allergies, food sensitivities, or just prefer to eat clean, this hidden coating raises major red flags. We should have the right to know what’s on our food and the right to choose what goes in our bodies. Most people that go to the grocery store will not realize that’s what this is. Isn’t the whole point having fresh fruits and veggies?
Always wash your produce but more importantly, ask your grocer if it’s been treated with Apeel. If you can’t pronounce it or wash it off, maybe it doesn’t belong on your food.
