After suffering from low back pain for years, Darla Botkin was diagnosed with degenerative disk disorder. She struggled with the increasing pain and limitations in her activities. But a chance encounter changed everything. Physical Therapist Assistant Rhene Baker happened to teach Darla's fitness class, which led Darla to our Derby center.

Darla's main priorities were returning to walking for pleasure and exercising without pain. Through her customized therapy program, Rhene taught her exercises to alleviate pain and prevent it from returning.

After a few short weeks, Darla said she's now walking pain-free for short distances and looks forward to reaching more goals as her treatment continues.

It's been a year since a motorcycle accident left Alan Heyne with nerve damage and temporarily paralyzed his left arm from the elbow down.

Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist Matt March at our Metro North center worked with Alan using several exercises to help restore function. Even when Alan was losing hope, Matt motivated him to keep going.

Now, Alan says he has completely regained the use of his arm and is working to build back strength. Watch the video to learn more about his inspiring story.

Watch as our therapists compete in a finger-wrapping race as a fun way to celebrate Occupational Therapy Month. And while this race is for fun, our therapists will not speed through your treatment. We go out of our way to treat each patient with attention and care to enhance comfort and mobility.

Ridel Fernandez was in a motorcycle accident that injured both arms. He needed surgery and a lot of help. "I could barely hold a cup of water or wash my own teeth," Ridel said. And as a full-time barber, he couldn't work.

Ridel came to our Miami Lakes center to work with Occupational Therapist Nilda Serra. "Nilda has been very helpful since the beginning," Ridel said. "Very encouraging and understanding."

Now, Ridel says he can do everyday tasks, like brushing his teeth, getting dressed and driving. He continues to work toward his long-term goal of getting back to work.

Your progress is incredible, Ridel. Keep up the great work!

Vickie Harra's right knee needed a basic replacement surgery. However, after surgery, her knee became infected 12 times, which led to the amputation of her leg above the knee in August 2022.

As a waitress for 40 years, the adjustment was hard. "I loved waitressing, and I miss it," Vickie said. "I miss working with people."

After waiting for her prosthetic and attempting home health therapy, Vickie sought help at our Independence North center. Physical Therapists Fred Wilson and Dan Speigle and Physical Therapist Assistant Dylan Bowling helped Vickie achieve a significant milestone: standing on her own again.

Vickie said they encouraged and motivated her, even when she felt uncertain. "[The] clinicians are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and friendly," she shared. "They make me feel at home."

Vickie has made incredible strides and continues with therapy to meet her goals of driving again and improving her walking.

We can't wait to see you continue to reach your goals, Vickie!

Manuel Mercedes is a lineman who helps install, maintain and repair power lines. In April 2023, a wire fell, which electrocuted him and led to the amputation of his left arm. He came to our Kansas City Main center to learn how to use his new prosthetic limb.

Manuel came in with a few goals: get back to playing with his kids, play his PlayStation again and return to work. With the help of Occupational Therapist Barbra Lewis, Manuel began a work conditioning program to prepare to return to the job. Barbara led him through various exercises, including placing nails in holes and threading a rope through a chain with his prosthetic.

Manuel's journey to recovery was not limited to his arm. The electrical line incident had also caused him back pain, which we addressed alongside his arm therapy. Our comprehensive approach involved a range of exercises and treatments, enabling Manuel to regain mobility and functionality in his arm.

Meet our Physical Therapist Andrew Miller, an avid runner who dreamt of qualifying for the Boston Marathon alongside his friend, Eric. Unfortunately, Eric passed away after a battle with cancer. In honor of his friend, Andrew is undertaking an incredible feat – running the entire Boston Marathon while juggling.

Teaming up with the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team, Andrew seeks to raise funds and celebrate Eric, whose love for juggling inspired Andrew. Watch our latest video to witness Andrew's inspiring journey and hear his touching story.

If anyone understands the power of physical therapy, it’s Kelly Stockdale-Nielsen. She’s a physical therapist and center manager who trains Border Collies for local, regional and national competitions. She’s also a Select Physical Therapy patient.

Kelly was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and needed a hip replacement. After her surgery, she turned to her co-workers for rehabilitation. “The team at my center coached me, allowing me to walk, exercise my dogs safely and return to work,” Kelly said. “I am so grateful for my healing, recovery and physical therapy.”

As an Olympic-style weightlifter and dental hygienist, Misty Cox uses her hands a lot. In fact, she developed carpal tunnel syndrome from overuse, which required surgery. Afterward, she turned to Occupational Therapist Hannah Osman at our Lee's Summit North center to work on regaining strength in her hands and wrists.

"My grip strength felt nonexistent, and lifting weights was completely out of the question," Misty said. "However, Hannah made me feel comfortable and more confident in my return to the activities I wanted to do."

Misty said two other physical therapists at a different company referred her to Hannah. "Hannah has been absolutely amazing and a true God-send," Misty said. "I'm so glad I listened and sought her out, as she is a true [asset], not only to Select Physical Therapy but the OT community as a whole."

Misty is still working her way back to lifting weights at full capacity. She has continued to improve her grip strength and add more weight to her workouts.
