With an office in Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey, the FOCUS Center for Vision and Learning, LLC provides neuro-optometric services for children and adults. There are many indicators that a child or adult may be suffering with their visual system that does not include the common “blurry vision”. Here are a few signs that a developmental optometry evaluation may be necessary.

- Has a developmental delay
- Complains of intermittent blurry vision
- Complains of double vision
- Complains of headaches or eye strain
- Rubs the eyes a lot when reading
- Has red or tearing eyes after reading
- Demonstrates erratic performance with reading and testing
- Consistently loses place while reading and copying from the board
- Guesses words based on the first letter
- Mixes up letters in the middle of words
- Tilts or turns the head to look at things
- Distorts posture while reading
- Tends to trip
- Dislikes swinging or movement
- Avoids eye contact
- Avoids reading

Enjoy some eye training with this fun graphic! See if you can do it... hold your finger about 1/2 way between you and the screen. You should see a third image form between the two sets of circles in the background. Enjoy the experience of seeing depth and keeping both your right and left eye on as part of the team. If you struggle to figure this out or find that the turkey or the pumpkin disappear, you may benefit from the advice of a good Neuro Optometrist 😀

From my husband David...

Hello Everyone,

My son Joshua and I are taking on a challenge this summer in Jackson Hole, WY on July 19th and 20th. We will be participating in the 29029 Everesting Event. To complete the event, we will be climbing the mountain a total of 19 times to achieve the height of over 29029 vertical feet, or the equivalent to the height of Mt. Everest, measured from sea level. https://29029everesting.com/

This has been an incredible journey for Joshua and I, and the training has been quite a teacher to both of us. We committed to ourselves to create a purpose or “WHY” around this event. We will be doing this in two ways.

First, each lap that we climb will be dedicated to individuals whose lives were or currently impacted by disease, in most cases related to cancer. I’m still figuring out the details, but each person’s name will be carried on the journey each lap. If there is someone in your life that has been or is going through something like this, please reach out and we will add their name to our list. We will all rise together, they will inspire us to climb the next lap and we hope to inspire them.

Secondly, we wanted to raise money and awareness for a very special organization that provides support for women going through a cancer diagnosis. The name of the organization is Mary’s Place By The Sea, located in Ocean Grove, NJ. More information about Mary’s can be found here https://www.marysplacebythesea.org/ , and the link to our fundraiser is at the end of this email.

As many of you know, in March of 2021, my body was diagnosed with AML or acute myeloid leukemia. Through what I sometimes refer to as the 4 critical aspects of my healing:
1. The loving support of my amazing wife, family, friends and people that I didn’t even know who prayed for me.
2. The amazing dedicated group of doctors, nurses, technicians and staff at Hackensack Meridian Hospital.
3. The holistic whole body support and treatments that I received.
4. A spiritual/meditation practice that allowed my body to heal and changed me from the inside out.
I am now living a life with a renewed sense of purpose.

When I was undergoing treatment, I was aware of how fortunate I was to have all of these 4 critical pieces to healing and that this was something not available to most people going through the same challenges. I wanted to be able to give back and be a part of expanding this type of whole human health care to others. Mary’s Place By The Sea, in Ocean Grove, NJ, is such a place that provides the supportive care and services to women whose bodies are going through a cancer journey. Joshua and I would be forever grateful for any contribution to this loving caring organization. Please use the attached link:

Empowering parents to take an active roll in their child's development is one of Dr. Lane's passions. So often we hear stories where a parent expressed a desire for more information to help their baby develop and a pediatrician said, "hold off on anything until the baby is 18 months old." It is never too early to start exercising with your baby.

Could vision problems be causing difficulties in your child's learning?

In this week's episode, I interview Dr. Sarah Lane, a Developmental Optometrist who specializes in working with children who struggle with the development of their visual skills and visual processing abilities.

Dr. Lane offers Vision Therapy and Rehabilitation to children and adults in her community and is a creator of Meaningful Moves which are a collection of exercises designed for parents and caregivers to easily use with babies to help optimize the development of sensory and motor skills.

She tells how Developmental Optometry found her when she started developing vision problems in 2nd grade. She struggled with reading and learning but she somehow made it through doing things differently from her classmates and sister and always making the high honor roll.

When she got to optometry school, she had frequent headaches that resulted from switching from looking at a board far away to looking at her notes. She was diagnosed with a vision problem—problem with focusing and two-eye coordination—and was recommended to do vision therapy, which she had never heard of. She changed her career path to help others who had vision problems that could be helped with vision therapy.

Along the way, she became a student of yoga and movement and as her vision improved with vision therapy, yoga, and movement, she started to ponder the question of how does the organization and movement of the body impact the visual system.

She brings a lot of learning to her optometry session with her clients including MNRI, Feldenkrais Method, Pilate, and Yoga as she believes in the importance of having a holistic approach and putting a lot of different pieces together that over time allow us to create the shift we desire.

She shares a success story of a boy in 7th grade who struggled to do what teachers wanted him to do exactly in the way they wanted. When he came to see her, she discovered that he was seeing double pretty much all the time and that double vision was related to the stress within his body. She brought in different modalities and body movement to balance the nervous system and now moving into high school, he is no longer seeing double and able to articulate what’s happening because of the tools he gained.

Dr. Lane's goal is to teach a person how their visual system works and to teach them tools to continuously maintain organization within the visual system. She helps them to have an experience that gets them more connected with how their eyes and visual system works.

She also talks about Meaningfull Moves, a program of exercises that parents can do with their children that set the foundation for sensory, motor, and visual development that include 5 areas of movement--Hand, Feet, Side to Side, Up and Down, and Upside Down.

Finally, she gives us this advice, “Take a deep breath and pay attention to your child and pay attention to yourself. Take one step at a time to make sure that each movement or each step gets you to a better place mind, body, and spirit.”

Enjoy this episode!

We are happy to announce that Meaningful Moves: Optimize your Baby's Development is now available. Dr. Lane has been working to share these exercises far and wide. All babies can benefit from these exercises. Starting with these exercises early and using them often may help to avoid concerns with some of the common developmental delays. This guide is designed to be easy to use. It is not designed to be a text book or overwhelm you with scientific information, there are plenty of books that do that. This book is meant to help parents start with these exercises right away and have fun with their babies as they provide powerful input to the developing brain.

Games can be a really fun way to work on improving your visual skills. "Spot it!" is one of my favorites! Here are two ways to make it more challenging:

increase the space between the cards on the table

hold one card up in front of your child so they have to look up and down as they look for the match

HAVE FUN!
