Summer is here… which means so are the heat emergencies, questionable hydration habits, and the annual reminder that “drinking two energy drinks and mowing the lawn for six hours” is apparently not a sound wellness strategy.
Heat illness management sounds simple on paper: cool the patient down, give fluids, transport if needed. Easy, right? Until the “just overheated” patient suddenly becomes confused, combative, stops sweating, or tries to convince you they are “totally fine” while actively cooking themselves from the inside out. Heat emergencies can deteriorate rapidly, and subtle warning signs are often missed long before the patient crashes.
The reality is that heat-related illness can happen almost anywhere; sporting events, fire scenes, hiking trails, festivals, training evolutions, EMS standby events, or to that one guy who insists cargo shorts and a black hoodie are acceptable attire in July. These patients can range from mildly uncomfortable to critically ill in a very short amount of time, and providers need to recognize the difference before the patient’s core temperature starts competing with the surface of the sun.
Join us for a fun, engaging, and practical deep dive into heat-related emergencies. We’ll cover recognition, assessment, treatment priorities, cooling techniques, prevention strategies, and the subtle clues that separate “needs a break and a sports drink” from “needs aggressive intervention immediately.”
REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE AT 5:00PM EST ON THE DAY OF THE CLASSES. THE CLASS REMINDER AND LOGON INFORMATION WILL BE SENT NO SOONER THAN 12:00 EST ON THE DAY OF THE COURSES.
