We are so happy to share that baby Ralph Havis is here! Ralph was born very early on September 17th after a beautiful but quite unplanned homebirth! We were lucky that our midwives were able to get to us shortly after a Ralph arrived to help monitor him after birth.

Unfortunately our midwives noticed low oxygen levels on Ralph and they were concerned enough to call an Ambulance. We were then transferred to the hospital where Ralph was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition called Transposition of the great arteries (TGA). He was air transferred to the Med center and had to have open heart surgery to correct it. Luckily his condition could be fully corrected and after a long two weeks in the NICU, we are finally back home together.

It has been a trying time and we are thankful for all of your thoughts and prayers, we hadn’t posted or talked about this before now as the situation was very fast changing.

We have worked with so many expecting moms, and experiencing the NICU has certainly given us a new perspective on what families go through during this process. We are cherishing this time bonding with our new son and looking forward to a smooth recovery and post partum, and then to see you all soon!

We also wanted to give a special thanks to Dr Emerie and Stephanie who have been taking such good care of you in our absence, and for you all to please forgive them for not being able to update you sooner, it was our choice to keep this private not theirs!

All our love

Julia, Kev, Jack and Ralph

Ever wondered why we recommend co-sleeping? Come borrow our copy of Dr James McKenna’s “Safe Infant Sleep”!

Professor McKenna is a world renowned expert on the relationship between moms and babes co-sleeping, breastfeeding and SIDS. While he recognizes that co-sleeping is not for every family dynamic, and must always be done carefully and safely, his research has indicated a massive list of benefits for the whole family:

😴 Better sleep for everyone
👩‍🍼 More consistent feeding for baby
👶 Improved social and psychological attachment for everyone
💜 Reduced potential for SIDS
💪 Improved development of immune, cardio-respiratory and central nervous systems

As always, co-sleeping must be performed safely with a thorough analysis of your current sleeping situation before trying with a baby, but when performed safely the benefits of co-sleeping are enormous!

Just hanging out in Tummy Time while Mom gets adjusted, no big deal 💁‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all know we’re supposed to do Tummy Time, but the range of reasons why is HUGE:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💪 Strengthens Muscles: When babies are placed on their stomachs, they use their neck, back, and arm muscles to lift their heads and explore their surroundings. This helps in building muscle strength, particularly in the neck and upper body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🚘 Develops Motor Skills: Tummy time encourages babies to push up, roll over, and eventually crawl. These movements are essential for the development of gross motor skills and coordination.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶 Prevents Flat Head Syndrome: Regular tummy time can help prevent flat spots from developing on the back of the baby’s head. It promotes a variety of positions for the baby’s head and reduces the risk of positional plagiocephaly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👀 Enhances Sensory and Cognitive Development: Being on their tummy allows babies to see the world from a different perspective. They can observe and interact with their environment, which stimulates their sensory and cognitive development.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💨 Aids Digestion and Reduces Discomfort: Tummy time can help alleviate gas and discomfort in infants, as the pressure on their abdomen can aid digestion and relieve trapped gas.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🚶‍♀️Prepares for Milestones: Tummy time is a precursor to important developmental milestones such as crawling, sitting up, and eventually walking. By practicing lifting their heads and pushing up on their arms during tummy time, babies strengthen the muscles needed for these activities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🗓️ All of that from such a simple exercise! Remember, Tummy Time is best done in short durations until muscle strength and co-ordination can be developed! And if you need any help, our monthly Tummy Time Class is on the 3rd Wednesday of every month! PM for more details!

Pelvic pain. Just a part of pregnancy or easy fix?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The p***c symphysis is a joint at the front of the pelvis that both holds the pelvis together and allow the flexibility required to walk and move. During pregnancy the shifting biomechanics required to allow baby to grow can cause new pulls and tensions on this joint, that overtime can develop into problems with fun names like Symphysis P***s Dysfunction (SPD), Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP) or Lightning Crotch (this may not be a medical term, but IYKYK).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The good news is that with a simple adjustment, delivered using our Activator tool, we can help bring the joint back into balance and reduce that pain, leading to a healthier and easier pregnancy.

Are you ?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Encouraging kids to go barefoot offers numerous benefits for their physical and even emotional development:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Improved Balance and Coordination: Walking barefoot allows children to engage the muscles and sensory receptors in their feet, enhancing balance and coordination.
2️⃣ Stronger Feet and Ankles: Without the support of shoes, children’s feet and ankle muscles have to work harder, leading to stronger arches and more stable ankles.
3️⃣ Enhanced Sensory Development: Walking barefoot stimulates the sensory nerves on the bottom of the feet, which can improve proprioception (awareness of body position) and tactile sensitivity.
4️⃣ Better Posture: Stronger feet and improved balance can contribute to better overall posture, reducing the risk of developing foot problems or musculoskeletal issues later in life.
5️⃣ Natural Foot Development: Shoes can restrict the natural movement and growth of children’s feet. Going barefoot allows the feet to develop naturally, leading to healthier foot mechanics.
6️⃣ Connection to Nature: Walking barefoot outdoors allows children to connect with their environment on a sensory level, fostering an appreciation for nature and the world around them.
7️⃣ Stress Relief: Feeling the ground beneath their feet can be calming and grounding for children, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
8️⃣ Increased Confidence: Mastering the skill of walking barefoot on different surfaces can boost children’s confidence in their physical abilities and resilience.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overall, while it’s important to ensure safety, encouraging kids to spend time barefoot, especially in safe and natural environments, can support their physical and emotional well-being.

How can chiropractic help with baby feeding? One part of our work with infants is to assess and encourage proper development in cranial structure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sometimes babies have tension within their cranials that makes it hard for them to latch and suck efficiently, leading to longer and more frequent feeds. By applying very gentle pressure to their palate or the roof of their mouth, we can reduce that pressure and help promote better feeding - its why many pediatric dentists won’t proceed with lip or tongue tie revisions without ‘bodywork’, as a tie revision is just one potential part of the problem.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Signs that your little one could benefit from cranial adjustments include a poor latch, chomping, leaking milk or formula on one side of their mouth, or seeming to have a better suck on one side of the mouth than the other.

Self care is health care, but not just for mom. A study by researchers at Cambridge University found that brainwaves of mom and baby align as time passes, allowing a better, deeper connection between them and the crucial development of empathy. And when mom is in a happier mood, the connection gets stronger. So it’s more important than ever to make time for you, so that the whole family can benefit.
