Garrett is so blessed to have so many people rooting for him!! Big things are coming, and we can't wait to see how far he will go in his recovery!

A few things on the agenda.
He is being referred back to TIRR for more therapy! The first time he went was during Covid and it didn't go very well. This time will be better! One of our goals right now is to get his body back into good working condition and they are just the team to do it! We don't have a specific date yet; we have to go through the process of getting insurance approval.

Garrett has also been measured for a new wheelchair. His original chair is no longer suited for his current body. Hopefully his new chair will make him more comfortable and will be able to grow with him as he continues to make progress.

Lastly, Thanks to so many who have donated, we are on track to get a round of intensives treatments with his functional medical team in Austin. Garrett just completed necessary bloodwork that will give them lots of information in order to get his body and brain prepared for the new treatments. We are hoping to be able to go at the end of this year or early next year! Here is their website if you would like to get more info on what they do there.

As always, we are so grateful to everyone who made a donation.
It takes a village!!

Important Update:
Garrett is doing really well. He is in a wonderful position to take his recovery to the next level and we need your help!
As most of you may remember, there was a huge setback between May 2023 – May 2024. There was a storm raging through Garrett’s entire system and nobody knew how to control it. There were too many hospital visits to count, and a wound that took an extremely long time to heal. Things have calmed down a lot over the last several months and he is ready to make big moves in his recovery!

Garrett has recently received a very generous donation on his Give Tax Free campaign. (Thank you, Elizabeth & Jeff!)
Because of that donation, we were able to reach out to Garrett’s functional neurology team and can begin preparing for new round of treatments. Garrett spent a week at The NeuroSolution Center of Austin in November 2021; after those treatments he had his best year and a half of recovery since his accident. Here is a link to their website. https://www.neurosolutionatx.com/ and their page https://www.facebook.com/neurosolutionatx/

We recently had a consultation with them to discuss the path forward. There are a couple of different treatments that will greatly benefit Garrett and initiate more recovery. Our biggest goal right now is for Garrett to talk again. These treatments will cost approximately $20k - $25k. Thanks to the recent donation, we’re able to pay for our consultation to determine best treatments, order specific testing that will be extremely beneficial to Garrett’s overall health and put down a deposit to get treatment started.

There are a few ways you can help! Donate at Garrett's Give Tax Free campaign and receive a tax credit, or you can contact the Dr.’s office directly and let them know you want to donate to Garrett’s treatment costs. Never accept Never.
Garrett is still making progress. He no longer takes Keppra for seizure. He's working on his core and has been able to sit on the side of the bed for periods of time unassisted. He laughs, he smiles and he is loved.
We will never give up fighting for his recovery. One day he will be able to tell his story for himself.

2024 was quite a year, full of ups and downs (mostly down if I’m being completely honest)
2025 will be a year of healing and progress! Our focus this year will be to get more Functional treatments that will help Garrett heal in a way regular medicine can’t. Unfortunately, functional treatments are not covered by insurance so we will be paying out of pocket. I will be posting a link to where donations can be made. This is a tax-free donation for anyone who may need a donation credit for taxes this year. 😊

2024 Re-Cap:
Garrett was in and out of the hospital for numerous reasons no one could figure out. This caused a lot of setbacks. During this time, he developed a wound that forced us to make several tough decisions. The first was to get a colostomy in May 2024. This would help keep the wound clean so it could heal quicker. We had to keep him in bed for extended periods of time and unfortunately, his arms and legs became very contracted due to lack of use. Before this, he was out of bed daily and getting lots of therapy and activity. Having contracted limbs causes a lot of discomfort which meant we had to give him a lot more pain medication. Anybody who has had to take a lot of pain meds, knows this brings on other issues as well.

Garrett’s body was so stressed and fighting so many things, he lost a lot of weight. He went from 150lbs to about 115 lbs. We had to resort to a 24-hour feeding pump to give him enough calories so he could get back to a good weight again. We’re still working on this, but things are on looking good and we're on the right track!

There were several medication changes, lots of antibiotics and too many tests to count. Finally, his infectious disease Dr had a tunnel catheter inserted so Garrett could get 6 weeks of IV antibiotics at home and stay out of the hospital. This apparently did the trick! He hasn’t been back in the hospital since May 2024!

With him finally able to stay out of the hospital for a while, we had to focus on getting healthy again. In October 2024 Garrett had contractor release with tendon lengthening surgery to help straighten his left arm, wrist and fingers. We decided to have surgery on the left arm only, because it was worse than his right arm. We didn’t want to cause too much stress on him by doing both arms at the same time especially if the surgery wasn’t going to be successful. Thankfully it worked, and he will have surgery on the right arm at some point this year.

After the arm was treated, we had to work on the legs. Garrett had a baclofen pump inserted in November 2024. This is like an insulin pump except it administers baclofen muscle relaxer directly to his spine. This should ease some of the pain and discomfort in his legs and hips. Hopefully we will be able to get back on the therapy table soon and restart physical and occupation therapy.

We are seeing Garrett trying to communicate so much lately! He is more alert and aware that he has been in almost a year. We’re praying for more healing this year.

We’re so grateful for everyone who prays for Garrett and for everyone who ask about him on a regular basis. Garrett is blessed to have those who love him surround him daily! He has also had visits from his Grandma from Mississippi and his Mimi from Louisiana this year!

We won’t be dwelling on the setbacks of 2024, but instead, we will be looking forward to seeing what God has planned for 2025.

Sherry received her gift from Garrett Riley's Road to Recovery a little early. This is more for his dr appointments and his nurses to see what he has scheduled daily/weekly/monthly and for them to be able to request things garrett needs or time off.
Thank you to all our family and friends who continue to send positive thoughts and prayers his way! Sherry will update later in the week as garrett will have a small procedure on Tuesday.

It was time to get some work done on the van before Garrett and his team head out next week for a week/month full of dr visits! Today he got new tires, new windshield wipers and some head lights. Shout out to the amazing staff and eliza at Tirelink Tomball for making sure we had the best tires to keep garrett, his momma and his caretakers safe while on the road! TIRELINK

Garrett had contracture release with tendon lengthening, and percutaneous pinning of wrist and fingers last Monday. Today his soft cast removed and replaced with a hard cast. His orthopedic surgeon says the results of the surgery are better than he expected. Hopefully Garrett will be able to get use out of his hand and arm once he is healed and he starts therapy.
My biggest fear was the pain Garrett was going to be in following this surgery but he has been a champ! His pain level had been surprisingly low.

Please keep praying for healing!! God can do great things!

Also, THANK YOU to everyone who had sent items from Garrett's Amazon wish list!

Garrett is so blessed to have people in his life who care about him. After an accident like this happens, it's easy to forget that person is still in this world. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a real thing. We will always keep Garrett IN SIGHT and remind others that he is still here and fighting harder than ever!

Thank you to those who are donating to his givetaxfeee.org campaign. We are so grateful!

Pictures may be a little graphic, but this is the reality of Brain Injury!

Prayers for Garrett Riley

On November 10, 2019 Garrett Riley Young suffered an unimaginable motorcycle accident that left him with a Traumatic Brain Injury or more specifically Anoxic Brain Injury. He spent the first 10 days in a coma, completely sedated and on a ventilator fighting for his life. He remained in Conroe Regional Hospital CCU for the first 3 weeks. He was then moved to a Long-term Acute Care facility nearby for continuing care. The neurological care at this facility was almost nonexistent. The neurologist did not participate in helping Garrett progress and ended up causing him more harm than good. We ended up moving to Memorial Hermann Neuroscience ICU in order to get Garrett stabilized. After almost 2 weeks there, we were able to move to Nexus Specialty Hospital. This is a Long-Term Acute Care Facility that specializes in Neuro Rehabilitation.

Garrett lost control of his motorcycle for unknown reasons. He was then hit by an oncoming car. When the car came to a stop Garrett was trapped underneath the car face down. He did not suffer any internal injuries, there were no broken or fractured bones, there was no swelling or bleeding on his brain. Garrett’s accident simply left him without oxygen to his brain for an unconfirmed amount of time. He has had to battle pneumonia, bacterial infections and ongoing seizures. Time and God will reveal his long-term neurological status. He has made a lot of progress since day 1 of his accident but he still has a very long way to go. Currently his eyes are open and will occasionally follow commands, though this is not consistent, but it is progress. He is able to use his legs and has movement in his arms. Physical Therapy is very helpful in maintaining a good physical status.

Garrett has a love of music, specifically Foo Fighters, Blink-182, Switchfoot, Queens of the Stone Age and Frank Sinatra. He taught himself how to play the guitar and drums. He and his girlfriend, Dakota, have 2 cats he adores, Ace and Spade. He also loves playing video games when he isn’t working as a land surveyor. Garrett is an amazing person who loves to laugh and joke around. He has a large support group of friends and family who love him and who are committed to helping him get better. He is and has always been a person who would do anything to help anyone in need, now HE needs our help!

Garrett has a great job with insurance but as everyone knows, insurance will only pay for so much. Spending an extended amount of time in hospital CCU and then being moved to a long-term care facility will be costly. We are asking for donations to help cover some of the costs of medical bills coming our way. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
