Hot take aka all the things we wish you knew about menopause

-the symptoms go beyond reproductive health

We can see hot flashes (vasomotor symptoms), brain fog, trouble sleeping, and joint aches and pains popping up all as signs that a shift in hormones is occurring

-exercise can help alleviate symptoms

Especially the vasomotor symptoms! We know it seems contradictory, but getting in exercise can alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause

-you need to fuel

In a low estrogen state, the capacity for recovery is lower. When we layer in underfueling on top of that, things can get dicey. Under recovered muscles don’t perform as well. You may have not noticed your symptoms of underfueling before, but now those PLUS the low estrogen makes things more apparent.

-hormone replacement therapy is a viable option for many

While this once was viewed as controversial, we now know the recommendation against use of HRT was a poor interpretation of a flawed study. Instead, HRT benefits may far outweigh the risks. YOUR specific history and symptoms should be taken to decide what the best next step is for you

Are you in the season of life with perimenopause or menopause on the horizon? You deserve to get education about all the things coming your way, and we are happy to help!

Hi, I’m Rachel 👋
Founder, pelvic floor PT, CrossFit coach, mom of two.

I built Disrupt because I believe YOU deserve more than what the traditional healthcare system offers. You deserve care that sees you as a whole person, not a number.

Pregnancy, postpartum, pain, performance. It’s all part of the same story: your body is strong, capable, and worthy of support.

When I’m not in the clinic, you’ll find me coaching, reading, or wrangling two crazy kids (and probably painting a wall in my house).

Disrupt exists because I know first-hand how powerful it is to have care that keeps you moving and living fully. 💪
Thanks for being here - you’re the reason we do this work.

We have so much data on the benefits of exercise in pregnancy, and we have so much more new data about the safety of higher intensities of exercise.

But if you ask us, one of the most powerful ways exercise benefits us in pregnancy is about more than physical health-it builds mental strength💪

We can’t decide we are done when we are in the middle of labor. When things get hard, there is no stopping. Especially in an unmedicated labor, we will push past boundaries we never thought we could surpass.

Exercise in pregnancy is powerful. It is powerful for baby. It is powerful for mom’s physical health. And it can build up mental resiliency for delivery, and for every next hard step that comes in the parenting journey

No matter whether you plan to do medicated or unmedicated delivery, or a vaginal or a cesarean delivery, “training for delivery” absolutely isn’t doing kegels. AND It’s not just learning to relax muscles or learning to push. It’s about the all encompassing experience of birth-and the powerful ways it breaks us apart to rebuild us stronger than we ever thought possible.

For too long, the world has told us to shrink - to be quieter, lighter, less noticeable.
But strength isn’t just about bracing properly and lifting heavily.

It’s about choosing to take up space in life, to stand tall in who you are, and to stop making yourself small for the sake of others.

That’s the heart behind our Strong Not Small slogan, and today, we’re bringing it to life with our newest merch drop. 🖤

It’s time to put the “wait six weeks to move your body” rule to rest

Here at Disrupt, we are in the business of removing barriers to exercise, not creating them. That means understanding that the person in front of you may need to not do nothing but lay in bed for weeks for her mental health.

We have no data that links early exercise to postpartum pelvic floor problems, but the data we do have? That postpartum mental health can be a crisis, and that movement and exercise is a key way to help.

We aren’t saying do it all, just like we aren’t saying do nothing. We are saying that every person has their own unique journey through pregnancy, postpartum, and with movement as a whole and that that journey should be viewed holistically, rather than with blanket statements.

The person who ran 5 miles a day or lifted weights consistently through the end of her pregnancy and had a short labor and no tears likely has a very different capacity for return to exercise than the person who wasn’t able to keep up with loading her body in that way, or the person who pushed for 3 hours or the one who had a 3rd degree tear.

And the mom with family support, a partner who is waking up to help with the baby at night, and an older kiddo in daycare may have a different trajectory than the mom home with 2+ kids with no family support, who is exclusively getting up with baby.

Every single person has a unique story to tell. Every single person deserves to be met where they are at, and guided in the process of returning to exercise postpartum. Every single person deserves to move their body in the way they feel they need to in order to support themselves.

And this all starts with accepting that the 6 week rule isn’t a hard and fast rule.

What if you didn’t have to just wait to see if you had pelvic floor problems? What if you knew you could prevent them?

We love a good research update. A hot off the presses systematic review highlights that women who utilized pelvic floor muscle training in pregnancy were less likely to experience leakage.

But if you know us, you know that doesn’t mean just do some kegels.

Pelvic floor muscle training should include establishing full range of motion of the pelvic floor (can you contract it, relax it, bear down?), coordination of the core (does it do what we want it to when we brace? Cough? Belly breathe?), and then strength (not just locally at the pelvic floor, but globally as well).

Healthier pregnancies —> healthier outcomes. If we are exercising in pregnancy, in ways that reinforce pelvic floor strength AND ALSO ways that build up the resiliency of our system, small things that come up in daily life are less likely to push us past symptom thresholds.

You don’t have to wait for problems to come on before choosing to build coordination and strength, and building up your capacity for whatever life throws your way, even in pregnancy 💪
