The Painted Doula

The Painted Doula As a Doula I provide Information, advocacy, comfort, direction, compassion, and above all else support to families as they experience pregnancy and childbirth.

Doula work is my second career. I believe that everything that I have done in my life thus far has lead me to this big change. I came across this quote that I feel illustrates my feelings about my exciting new life:

"The adventure of life is to learn. The purpose of life is to grow. The nature of life is to change. The challenge of life is to overcome. The essence of life is to care. The opportun

ity of life is to serve. The secret of life is to dare. The spice of life is to befriend. The beauty of life is to give." -Ritu Ghatourey

I first became interested in doula work when I befriended one of my hair salon clients, Kathleen Wilson, who owns Labor Enabler. She would talk to me about how she helps people to achieve the birth experiences that they wished for. Over the next 5 or so years I would tell her whenever I saw her that I wished I could do what she does for people. Finally, in the summer of 2012, she invited me to apprentice with her and then see how I felt after attending a few births with her. I have spent my time since then learning everything I can from Kathleen, and immersing myself in every book, article, workshop, and birthing experience. I have learned that birth is not a diagnosis with symptoms and treatments, but a physiological process that our bodies were made to perform. I have learned about women making informed decisions about their own births. I have learned that birth is not something that 'happens to you,' it is something that should be facilitated according to your wishes. I have learned that medical intervention is absolutely miraculous, but not always necessary or wanted. I have learned that when it is necessary or wanted it is often a God send. I have learned the power of compassion and empowerment.

Did you know? Papaya, especially green papaya, has been a prized superfood for late pregnancy and the postpartum period for centuries in Thailand, among other cultures. Green papaya boosts oxytocin production, which can help initiate labor and is incredibly high in the enzyme Papain, which is said to help with milk production. It is a rich source of Vitamins A, C, E, folate and many beneficial enzymes which provides tremendous benefits for blood flow and circulation. One of my favorite recipes using green (or ripe) papaya is my twist on the Thai papaya salad. Here is my method and recipe ☺️

In a bowl, add:
-1/2 of a green papaya, shredded
-2 carrots, shredded
-1 red or orange sweet pepper, sliced
-huge handful of sugar snap peas, chopped

Then make the dressing by adding the following to a food processor:
-4 oz of peanuts or cashews
-5 cloves of garlic
-1 Fresno Chile pepper or a mild red pepper, but the spicy Fresno helps if you can handle the heat

Blitz these ingredients until they are coarsely ground. Then add
-juice and zest of 2 or 3 limes
-2 tablespoons of Thai fish sauce
-2 tablespoons of coconut sugar or honey (coconut sugar has better flavor in my opinion)
-a splash of water to tone down flavor if you’d like. It’s a bold dressing

Combine it all in the bowl with veggies and enjoy! Keeps in fridge for 3-4 days if you’d like to make in bulk.

Just realized that my first doula baby turned 10 today!!!! How wild is that???? Something woke up inside me that day that I didn’t know I had in me and I’ve never looked back. I’ve been on the welcoming committee for 308 babies since then. I am so grateful to this mom who took a chance on me and allowed me to tag along with Labor Enabler and support her through her labor and birth, and also to Kathleen for letting me wear her down into training me. Every day that I do this job I know that I am where I am supposed to be. Happy Birthday Andy and Happy Birth Day Eva!!!!!!

Sometimes people buy me as a gift for someone they love and it makes me feel so important and valued. It’s like, “here you go friend, I got you your very own Joli because I know how much you will love her and she will help.” It’s a very warm and fuzzy feeling that this person who cares enough to do something kind for someone decided that my work was that kind thing to give them. Just the musings of a very sleepy doula. 🥰 good night!
