Did you know that early settlers used a mixture or natural elements like clay, mud, straw, and animal hair along with stones and sticks to fill the gaps between the logs in their homes? Today we use synthetic sealants, stretchable, durable, and resistant to the elements. Take a look at how our crews brightened up this home by spending time refreshing both the logs and the chinking!

By using our top of the line FLIR thermal imaging systems we take the guess work out of finding the gaps in your log home.

Infrared imaging has quickly become a valued tool in identifying problems related to energy loss, water and insect infiltration, inefficient HVAC systems and much more. The thermal imaging camera identifies patterns of heat loss that are invisible to the naked eye and quickly indicates air leaks within the structure with measurement data that can easily be compiled into a printed report.

A computer controlled blower door depressurizes the home to an industry standard of -50 pascals, which simulates a 20mph wind blowing on all four sides of the structure simultaneously. As air is drawn through failed log joints the temperature of the log surfaces changes, producing a thermal image that can be recorded. This allows accurate identification and repair the problem areas to stop the energy loss immediately.

How often should I reseal my log home? The short answer is usually every 3-5 years but this can vary due to many factors. Sealant manufacturers are reluctant to make absolute projections of their products’ longevity due to variances in the type of sealant, choice of color (darker shades provide more UV protection), which side of the house (prevailing UV and weather patterns), what type of surface preparation, and so on. Check out this free video resource with some helpful tips on how to know when your log home needs to be restained.
