SPIRITUAL WARFARE & CONFLICT CONT’D …
Do you remember the question I asked at the end of my last post? It was “How do we navigate the spiritual attacks against our faith & stay true to God’s Word?
JACOB’s STORY
We’ve been using the story of Jacob’s life in this sermon series & there was certainly a lot of conflict that existed in his life. Nevertheless, Jacob was used by God. This was in spite of Jacob being far from perfect. And God continued to use him to work among the people. Jacob’s own parents didn’t get along. They contributed to the conflict by each having a different favorite child. As you might guess, this caused problems between Jacob & his brother Esau from the start. They fought all of the time. Jacob even tricked Esau into parting with his birth rite & that angered Esau so much he threatened to kill his brother.
Esau, in an effort to strike out against his parents, married some foreign women. This caused additional strife among the family. Then there were territorial issues, causing their neighbors to not like them. They were constantly fighting over the wells pastureland. Remember, Jacob fled in fear & went to live with his Uncle Laban. He ended up marrying Laban’s two daughters (Leah & Rachel). These sisters were constantly competing for Jacob’s affection. Leah had a bunch of kids, while Rachel couldn’t have any. At one point, Rachel (who was Jacob’s favorite wife), said this …
“I have had a great struggle with my sister,
and I have won.”
~ Genesis 30:8
So, things were challenging for Jacob & to make matters worse, he had territorial issues with his father-in-law Laban. Jacob eventually ended up with 12 sons & (of course) they fought with each other as well. My guess is that most of can see similarities some between our life & Jacob’s.
“We need to Remember this …
the Christian Life is a Fight!”
OUR CHRISTIAN LIFE IS A FIGHT OF FAITH
Our Christian life is not a party … it’s a battle! In fact, the Bible uses several different motifs to describe what a Christian’s life is like. One that’s widely used is that of a journey, a walk, or a race to be run. Another motif that’s used is the farm picture … we plant the seeds, the crops grow & produce fruit & we harvest them. Still another motif is the family picture. In this picture, God represents Our Heavenly Father & we are all brothers & sisters in Christ … loving each other most of the time. Yet another motif is the food picture. with Jesus representing the bread & when we take communion, we are reminded that He is our subsistence … providing the nutrition we need to grow & flourish. These are all great representations of our Christian life but there is still one other that is used most often. It’s that of a war, a battle.
From the very beginning, the Bible describes our journey as a battle against an enemy who wants to destroy, rob & devour us. Along with the Holy Spirit, we need to put on the full armor of God & take a stand against him. It’s that picture that is constantly presented in all of the Scripture, even to the very end. In fact, it’s in Revelations that it says the culmination of all of this is going to be one huge battle, where our conquering king is going to come & finally put our enemy to rest.
We’re also told that as we approach the end of our journey, it’s going to get tougher & tougher. This is because the enemy knows his time is short. I don’t know about you but, it feels to me like we are experiencing some of that today! Satan knows his time is limited so he’s pulling out all of the stops & doing everything he can to destroy us. Our Christian life is a fight of faith. We are called to be soldiers … to put on the armor of God, to stand firm & to deal with the conflict in a way that Christ wants us to deal with it.
In my next post, we will look at 4 stories from the Bible that illustrate this Spiritual Warfare that we are facing today!
