From NY to AR
Achilles Arkansas was founded by two people who had never met, yet both lived in NYC and ended up in Arkansas. Mary Dean (left) had worked in NYC as an occupational therapist and got involved with the Achilles International running group there. She went from volunteering at workouts, to guiding marathons, to being in a band with other Achilles members. When she moved to back to her hometown in Arkansas, she missed the community of Achilles and wanted to start a chapter there. Elise Wyatt (right) took a gap year and moved to NYC to work. While there, she started volunteering with Achilles Kids and loved the mission and impact it had on both the volunteers and guides. During her first two years of college at University of Arkansas, she would frequently travel up to NYC on weekends to visit friends and volunteer with Achilles Kids. One day, she had the idea to inquire about starting a chapter in Arkansas. She called the Achilles headquarters only to find out another lady living in Arkansas had contacted them a couple days before asking the same thing! Mary and Elise got in contact and met up the next day. Thus, the Arkansas chapter of Achilles was born! Achilles Arkansas had their first workout June 1, 2019 and since then, they have been working to grow the Arkansas chapter and promote inclusion in the running community.
