October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month, and it is just a week away.
Every October, we acknowledge the countless families who have been touched by the loss of a baby, and actively engage our community in working together to raise social awareness about pregnancy and infant loss. At Share, we hear parents' stories of being truly, tenderly, knowledgably supported after the loss of their baby; we also hear far too many parents share that they had little or no support, that they were surrounded by silence and discomfort that made their grief even more overwhelming and isolating. One parent shared, "I felt like I was on an island of grief that no one else could see."
We know that increasing support for families comes through increasing awareness: through educating and informing our families, communities, and care providers about the unique grief of losing a baby. We strive to teach how to better support patients, friends, and loved ones as they navigate their life without their beloved child.
This October, Share will be posting daily insights intended to raise awareness into the reality of pregnancy and infant loss. We will begin conversations that aim to shatter the silence that often comes in the wake of the loss of a baby. We will embrace sharing our stories, and invite you to share your stories, too. Awareness grows from understanding, and we invite all of you to join us as we seek to educate, inform, and touch those who struggle to know what to say and do for those who are grieving baby loss. We will encourage one another, and move through the month together, and work tirelessly to pave the way for better support for the bereaved families who will come after us.
