Negative self-talk can be a major obstacle to achieving our goals and feeling good about ourselves. Leading to feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression, sometimes it feels impossible to get out of the funk. But with the right tools and support system, we have the power to change our thoughts and break free from negative self-talk.
One of the most effective ways I have been able to overcome negative self-talk is to just simply recognize when it's happening and to challenge. When we get stuck reinforcing that "I'm not good enough," our brain will believe it. Brains can only work with what its given. When you begin to become aware of your thoughts, if disrupt the negative loop by countering that thought with "I am capable and deserve to be happy.", you actually challenge your brain to begin to find ways to make that believable.
Another practice is being mindful and focusing on the present moment. Most negative thoughts are about something that has or has not even happened yet. We almost never find ourself just thinking about the present moment at hand. Being present can help to reduce stress and anxiety, becasue most of the time, there isnt anything in the present moment that is emotionally ‘threatening’ you.
It's also so important to surround yourself with supportive people who will build you up and encourage you. If you find that negative self-talk is overwhelming you, don't hesitate to seek help from a professional therapist or counselor or a trusted friend or family member that understands what you are going through and has the space to hold when you need it. There is nothing wrong with being vulnerable. It might be uncomfortable but in discomfort is growth.
Remember, negative self-talk is a habit, and like any habit, it can be changed with practice and patience. Keep working on yourself and believe in yourself, you are worthy and capable of achieving your goals!
