Leg pain, often diagnosed as sciatica, can be a painful and debilitating problem, that can interfere with walking, standing, sitting, and sleeping. Along with pain, symptoms such as throbbing, numbness, weakness, and “pins and needles” can also be present.

Sciatic leg pain is often initiated by a routine task or, in many cases, has no clear cause at all. These leg conditions are slow to respond to traditional types of care, such as muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory meds, rest, heat, or ice.

ART treatment releases the muscles that are compressing the sciatic nerve, giving instant relief to patients suffering from this type of pain. If you are ready to be pain free, find an ART Provider using the link below: https://activerelease.com/find-a-provider/

Several years ago, I (Rick) injured my shoulder playing baseball with my son. It was difficult to perform even the simplest daily activities. Although the acute pain did improve, I was left with a stiff shoulder that hurt with any type of lifting overhead or even sleeping on my side. What was the solution? Intentional mobility! I reviewed which daily activities caused pain, and which movements did not. I looked at my entire body position, not just the painful areas, during those activities. By focusing on the entire body, my shoulder and trunk motion improved to the point I could begin strengthening pain free (no manipulation, no modalities, x-rays, MRIs, and thankfully, no surgery). Over time, I was able to resume pain free daily tasks, including lifting objects overhead.
Have you been trying to improve your pain on your own? Do you need help figuring out what to do next? If you are still struggling, let us help you with the next steps in getting rid of your limiting pain. Through functional mobility exercises and home program activities, we can partner with you on the road to pain-free activity!

Ergonomic Tip – Gardening Hand tools
Our hands are used for almost all of our activities. Unfortunately, they are subject to overuse just like other parts of our bodies. This can lead to issues such as Carpal Tunnel, Trigger Fingers, tendonitis, thumb arthritis, mallet fingers, and ligament pain. It’s important to protect them the best we can. Ergonomic gardening tools can be helpful & they come in all shapes and sizes. There is no “best” when it comes to ergonomics. It really is about positioning the body to reduce excessive forces. Think about the tool handles. There are soft grip handles, contoured handles, and enlarged handles. These handles are modified in attempt to reduce the forces generated from the hand to the tool while reducing the overall work. When choosing gardening tools, the questions to ask yourself are: Does the handle fit the size of my hand? Does the shape or contour of the handle reduce the amount of bend in the wrist? Does the handle size allow me to get a good grip on the tool? Easy questions, but we tend to shop for convenience and price, not ergonomics. If you love gardening, you will perform hundreds if not thousands of repetitive movements this season. Even reducing forces by even a small percentage can have a big impact on your hands and wrists.

Spring has arrived and with Spring comes yard work! This sudden increase in activity can create aches and pains that may lead to injury. One common condition from a sudden increase in yard work is Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis). As we look upon our beautiful spring lawn, suddenly, we see IT, a W**D. We prepare for battle. This battle begins with bending over, reaching to strangle the w**d, and pulling as hard as we can. If we did not have our coffee, we pull the w**d with even more force, which can either create elbow pain or irritate the previously painful elbow. There are ways to prevent this painful problem. Using tools such as a spade, fork, manual w**d puller, or trowel can reduce stress to the elbow. Positioning yourself as close as you can to the w**ds themselves will help you avoid pulling with the elbows straight. When the elbows are straight, the body is pulling, and the hand is grasping, stress occurs at the point the muscle attaches, creating irritation of the tendon. So, before you go into battle, consider the position of your body and what tool could make the job easier. Happy w**ding! :)
