Not only is it a good day to recognize the importance of birds in our ecosystem, but also the fact that many people feel that certain birds represent visits from beloved people we have lost. There is even a 2024 book about how birdwatching can help people in grief nurture hope. For those who are interested, it is called Looking Up: A Birder's Guide to Hope Through Grief by Courtney Ellis, who is also a pastor.

In case you need a reminder, grief is not selfish. Soren Kirkegaard wrote this in 1847:

“The work of love in recollecting one who is dead is thus a work of the most unselfish, the freest, the most faithful love. Therefore go out and practice it; recollect the one who is dead and just in this way learn to love the living unselfishly, freely, faithfully.”

We agree with practicing this kind of love. Reminisce to bring a loved one close again.
