Congratulations to Becky J., a nurse supervisor at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, who was nominated by colleagues and received The DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Read an excerpt from the nomination story.

"Becky has been a wonderful leader that continues to show support for all who work around her every day. She has a way to lead her team with compassion, but at the same time, making sure patients come first. Becky is a mentor to me and someone whom I have always admired. She has staff who respect her and the work that she does. She is trustworthy by allowing other leaders to run something by her without any judgment. I personally have grown as a leader because of Becky.

Becky has supported me in my leadership role over the last 5 years. Through those years, I have watched Becky take time for every staff member who comes to her, whether it is personal or work-related.

I have also worked closely with Becky in the emerging leadership group. She offers ideas for improvements with her critical thinking skills. She is also willing to listen to other thoughts and ideas of the group to make decisions.

Becky is the textbook of a compassionate leader. She can be tough when needed, but she also leads with her heart."

The health risks of processed and ultra-processed foods are getting a lot of attention. But what are they? Here's how foods are ranked
from minimally processed to mostly or ultra-processed:
• Minimally processed foods, such as fresh blueberries, cut vegetables and roasted nuts, are prepped for convenience.
• Foods processed at their peak to lock in nutritional quality and freshness include canned tomatoes, tuna, frozen fruit or vegetables.
• Foods with ingredients added for flavor and texture, such as sweeteners, spices, oils, colors and preservatives, include jarred pasta sauce, salad dressing, yogurt and cake mixes.
• Ready-to-eat foods like crackers, chips and deli meat are more heavily processed.
• The most heavily or ultra-processed foods include sweetened breakfast cereals, soda, energy drinks, artificially flavored crackers and potato chips, chicken nuggets and hotdogs.

Reading the nutrition facts label on food packaging can help you make your choice, too.

Congratulations to Josh M., a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, who was nominated and received The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Read an excerpt from the nomination story.

“I survived a major su***de attempt. I spent a total of 10 weeks in the hospital. While the majority of the staff were often helpful, Josh topped them all. Even when I wasn’t his assigned patient at times, he still took time to talk with me and offered to assist me. While I don’t remember much of those 10 weeks, I do remember Josh and his kindness and compassionate care he provided for me and other patients. (Even those of us who were complete pains.) I never once witnessed Josh become frustrated, but rather eager to help wherever and whenever he was able.”

During pregnancy, it’s crucial to stay safe in the heat. Pregnant individuals are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke due to their body’s natural cooling mechanisms working harder. To protect themselves, they should:

⭐Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily, especially in hot weather. Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks.
⭐Recognize Symptoms: Heat exhaustion symptoms include headache, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Heat stroke is more severe and requires immediate medical attention.
⭐Dress for the Heat: Wear loose, breathable fabrics and seek shade when outdoors. Submerging feet in water can help lower body temperature

Rick, an Eleva, Wisconsin, resident, has a compromised immune system after battling cancer, so even minor illnesses can quickly become serious. Earlier this year, when he started feeling sick, a trip to urgent care led to the Emergency Department at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and hypoxia and admitted overnight.

"After spending one night in the hospital, a nurse came in and told me about a program they offer where they could bring the hospital to my home," says Rick. "When I heard that, I told her, 'Oh yeah – I'm in, let's do it."

Rick was placed in the Advanced Care at Home program and equipped with a technology kit set up by paramedics, which includes a Bluetooth-enabled pulse oximeter, scale and blood pressure cuff. He was also given a tablet that allows 24/7 access to the virtual nursing team and outlines his upcoming in-home visits.

Being back at home allowed Rick to fight his illness in a familiar setting, and the easy setup also allowed him to work through treatment.

"The team was very thorough in their instructions when they were setting up the equipment, and it did not feel overwhelming at all," Rick says. "They were straightforward, kept it simple, and it was very easy to understand."

While on Advanced Care at Home service, Rick received virtual nursing visits and also had in-home visits from paramedics and phlebotomists, a visit from his advanced practice professional and a discharge completed by his nurse.

"Everyone who came to my house in person and virtually was very professional. They explained what they were doing and made me feel comfortable," Rick says. "My care team was phenomenal."
