The months of August – November are known as the ā€œRed Zoneā€ on college campuses due to more than 50% of sexual assaults occurring during this time. Help keep yourself and other Bears safe this year by focusing on-

Consent – Consent means getting a clear and voluntary ā€œyesā€ before engaging in any form of physical contact or intimacy. Consent is everyone’s right and can be changed at any time. Remember, a person who is incapacitated or unconscious cannot give consent.

Community – Sexual assault prevention is everyone’s responsibility! Educate yourself on ways to safely intervene in risky situations such as creating a distraction, checking in directly with the person at risk, or reaching out to safety officers. Keep your own safety a priority as you make choices to help keep others safe.

Awareness – Sexual assault is never the fault of the victim, but there are steps you can take to help promote safety like attending social gatherings and traveling in groups you trust, not leaving your drink unattended or accepting a drink you didn’t see made, and keeping an eye out for concerning behavior.

For further information or support, please reach out to the Counseling Center’s Victim Services and Advocacy Specialist, Laura Foster at laurafoster@missouristate.edu or by calling 417-836-5116.
