One of the most incredible tapa cloth pieces I’ve ever seen, with my own eyes, was just installed inside Hiatus! 🤩🙏🙌
Unlike woven material, tapa is made from literally soaking and pounding tree bark until it’s soft and pliable like fabric. Then it’s painted from natural dyes from plants. Just extraordinary.
Tapa was displayed ceremonially for special occasions, like weddings, and in sacred contexts, tapa was used to wrap images of deities. Even today, at times of death, bark cloth may be integral part of funeral and burial rites. (Check out more about tapa in the comments below. Link posted.)
This particular tapa is Tongan, which I adore extra as my eldest brother spent some time in a Tongan area of Southern California and learned some of the Tongan customs and traditions as a missionary.
We hope you’ll feel the reverence and cultural celebration of our eclectic world, when you take a step inside of Hiatus.
Oh and do you like our wicker monkey?! 😍 🙈 😅 He loves to swing from the light fixtures.
