Hiring an experienced trainer can be beneficial in many ways—. But why? Because your friend that works out can train you right? Or surely that person online that did a show knows that they are doing, right? Yes- most trainers or people that know their way around a gym can make you do a combination of things that fill an hour, but there are many pieces that you may not be seeing. Let’s talk exercise selection. Is your trainer just filling an hour with random pieces or are they actually curating an hour for you? This can mean a lot of different things. For ANYONE- there needs to be a method to this madness. If your trainer can’t explain why A is before B or why they chose C instead of D for you, that’s a problem. This can go wrong in both directions as well! If you are brand new to the gym, you probably don’t need to be hitting several movements for a tiny isolated muscle, you need to be MOVING and learning to do some compound movements and basics. You likely aren’t going to connect with your rear delt on day 2 or month 2 😉. It’s simple things you see online every day- like doing both a step up and a split squat in the same session- if you are going to be in the gym, your time should be used wisely! Putting together a solid training session requires many pieces, not only knowing enough to do so, but then comes intensity and ex*****on. Adjusting a movement to fit an individual’s mechanics and also finding an appropriate tempo/ intensity AS WELL as fitting a person’s personality. What do I mean by that? Well - maybe client A will get more out a squat machine vs a free bar squat because they are nervous under a bar, or maybe I know they ENJOY this squat variation more so they will apply more effort. A lot of thought goes into this part when you are passionate about it- so make sure you find someone who truly is passionate about it! Ryan and I have had 1-1 clients for over 10 years now- we love it, we respect it and more importantly we love sharing it with others just as much as we love it for ourselves.
